Gear drive
Gear drive
Has anyone used a gear drive instead of a timing chain on their TPI engine? I am thinking of doing this but I am wondering the effect it will have on the knock sensor since they are a little noisy.
Thanks

Some work some don't. My advice? Don't waste your time or money on it.

Re: Gear drive
Not worth it. Install a good quality chain and forget it. Don't cheap out on an inexpensive offshore brand. You get what you pay for. Around $100 is usually the price for a good quality timing chain set with billet gears.

Everyone is just repeating what the last guy said... who tested it? I had a milodon drive on an EFI motor once, never had a prob w/ the knock system

Re: Gear drive
I've tested it however I don't have EFI on my race engine. I had a gear drive on the engine for a day then yanked it off and reinstalled the chain. I couldn't imagine driving around with it in a daily driver.
You'll be much happier with a good chain system.

If you can hear the gear drive your exhaust isn't loud enough

Re: Gear drive
not sure how it will effect the knock sensor, but id recommend the quiet version. it gets annoying when stupid people constantly say, SOUNDS LIKE YOU NEED POWER STEERING FLUID. maybe 1 in 10 know what it is. just my experience. i guess my exhaust wasnt loud enough. lol.

If your exhaust is so loud that you don't hear your gear drive, it'll be too loud to hear the problem that'll leave you beside the road.

It's not for everyone I'll admit that cause you do hear a constant whine but I love it!

Re: Gear drive
I want a gear drive for the long term performance it gives. Buy the best chain in the world and it will still stretch although not as much as a cheap one. I ran nothing but gear drives on my older pre knock sensor engines and wouldn't run anything else. I do appreciate everyones persoanal likes and dislikes but does anyone know for sure if the knock sensor picks them up? A knock sensor is tuned and is supposed to only pick up on the frequency of KNOCKS, not the whine of a gear drive. Would love to hear success and failure stories with details as to what gear drive was used. Thanks ahead of time

Re: Gear drive
Honestly thats hard to answer. Because the same reason y you want a gear drive is why it may not I'll explain. A gear drive does it job so well that in fact it transfers some of the vibration that normally would be shrugged off by a looser chain system. So depending on how well balanced your engine may or may not be it will or won't trigger the knock sensor. My L98 no it doesn't trigger the knock sensor but m engine also has been rebuilt and well balanced can't say it wouldnt work for you or would!

Re: Gear drive
You could always get a custom prom that takes the knock out of the computer

Re: Gear drive
It's gotta have a little whine.... love the sounds of a well running engine! Like listening to a live band, until one of the members die! LOL. I guess I am going to have to give in and get set up to communicate with the ECM. The guy I bought the car from had the computer built and it does a good job but I can't stand not knowing what it is and is not doing. Can someone point me to a good link on here that covers what is needed to start playing with the 'puter?
Thanks everyone.
