1983 trans am
hey everyone i have an 83 pontiac trans am that im trying to get road worthy but i hit a bit of a snag when i turn the car on and I try to put it in gear it shuts off. and the only way i can move the car is when i step on the brake put it in gear and rev the engine but that just makes the car burnout and when i let go of the gas pedal the engine just shuts off i dont know if its the carburetor or something else can somebody help me

Does this happen with a cold engine? Only when hot? Always?
Some things to check would be choke actuation and pull-off (for a cold engine), fuel bowl level, idle mixture base setting and MCS setting, curb idle speed, and vacuum leaks of any sort.

it will idle once i get the rpm high for a few minutes then it idles fine then when i put it in gear the car shuts off
