Cam question
So I posted a while ago inquiring about building a 305. Well its all starting to come together and I'm now at the point where I need to chose a cam. I found one, but I'm wondering how it will behave in a 305 since its a smaller engine. Here's the link to it

I was wondering how it will idle, how it will make the engine behave on the road, etc...I'm still new at this so please excuse my ignorance.

Re: Cam question
I haven't tried one but I think it is on the bigger side for a 305 but is probably OK with a 2400 stall (if you have an auto). Some go with the 256 for a 305. Having said all that I would give it a go.

Re: Cam question
Ah okay. I do have an auto and it has a 2500 stall. This would be going in a car that will be a daily driver so I didn't know if it would be too temperamental or not...

Re: Cam question
Its aggressive but should work for a 305 with a good tune. Definately have some lope to it. I've tuned my friends 350 car with a rather big 230/236 grind. 305 with a 224 would be similar. It can drive fine, just needs tuned and your power band will be from 3500-6500. Cam really comes on above 3000 rpms. Down low, its so-so. Gear and converter help

Re: Cam question
So even though the specs say the power band is 1600-5800 rpm, because its going in a smaller engine it changes the power band? So would the cam have to be degreed?
And would this one be a little less lopy and build power at a lower rpm: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-CL12-207-2/ My transmission changes gears at 5800 so I want a cam that will pull up to that or some where close.

Re: Cam question
That cam is no bigger than stock... if you want a decent cam, something a step down from the 224 you posted will work good. 212/218 or 218/224 if you want a comp cam.
yes, smaller motor will change power band. Cam power bands are commonly listed for 350 ish sized motors but even then some of the advertised numbers are false. Depends on the intake and heads too.

So you recommend one like the one you put in your friends car or this one:

Sorry if I sound redundant, but I just want to make sure I have my facts straight.

Re: Cam question
First cam you posted is the 268. XE268H-10 224/230.
Second cam you posted is a 255DEH, old lobe technology 203/212. Not a big difference in the stock roller cam 305's and L98's but not sure what the factory flat tappet specs were.
The last one, CS XE256H-10. Good grind for a 305. Mild but definately a step up over stock. I'd choose that one or this one.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-12-238-2/ The xe262.
Both would be fun in a 305 with that last one being alittle lopey with it on a 110 lsa. If you are fuel injected and wanted to be alittle easier to tune, then get it on a 112-114 lsa.
Comp has 12-262-4

Its the same as the other 218/224 but on a 114 lsa. MUCH better idle quality.
Anything in that range would be great. Nice cam that you can drive daily but still notice its idle and performance increase.

Re: Cam question
I would not go over 215* intake duration @ 0.050" for a daily driven 305.
The stock 1986 305 camshaft was 179*/194* duration 0.350"/0.384" lift.
You can make the engine run with the bigger cams, but they will need significant work on the PROM tuning. You also give up some street manners and fuel mileage.
