2-piece RMS replacement

question, I have the same years block on my 92 Z28. The rear main is leaking bad, and needs to be replaced. Motor fine..long story why the seal is garbage now.

I know that it is a 2 piece rear main because mine is a 4 bolt as well..yes i kept it carbed, i like that better. My question is this. Can I keep the motor in the car without pulling it up or out a little to replace it? Also, whats the average cost of a rear main 2 pice for a 350 4 bolt block? thanks

Re: 2-piece RMS replacement

I moved this from the thread you posted in because it had nothing to do with the thread you posted in (that's a TGO rule, you know) except the year of the engine.

2-piece rear main seals are cheap. A few bucks. The expense comes in the labor.

Yes, it can be done with the engine in the car. A bit tricky, but do-able. With 1-piece RMS, you either have to pull the engine or drop the transmission.

1- or 2-piece RMS has absolutely nothing to do with whether it is 2- or 4-bolt main. Both came with both. However, if your engine is 1974, it will be 2-piece RMS. It could still be either 2- or 4-bolt main.

I have to have a pretty good reason to pull an engine. Replacing a rear main seal doesn't qualify.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: 2-piece RMS replacement

We each have different tools, setups, and tolerance for laying in puddles of petrochemicals; but me personally, I'd pull the motor. Not only do I spend less time laying on my back with funk dripping on my face, but also, the odds of getting it back together PERFECT and LEAK-FREE are vastly better.

Just MHO.
