84 305 Please help getting desperate!

Ok so heres the scoop. Rebuilt the top end this summer and still having issues. I know the carb is prob in need of being replaced, was having some issues with 'Get up and go" rebuilt it and even replaced the fuel pump, ran great for a few days then back to crap, so im assuming thats prob the issue.

Major issue im having is, during the summer after putting it all back together it started running hotter than i remembered. Had to run the fan constantly. Then Ive had an issue where it'll run, then it seems like after a certain amount of time it stalls out and dies and wont start again till its cooled off. Even recently (about a couple months ago) replaced the thermostat cause the one i had in was locked).

One thing im kind of starting to think is my vacuum set up is wrong, im either missing something or dont have something hooked up right. The diagram sucks and well lets be honest, the damn thing looks like a bowl of spagetti and i would have been better off just blindolding myself and scribbling on a piece of paper to design a diagrahm.

So can or does anyone have a picture or two of the set up so i can see exactly what goes where? I would be SOOO Greatfull, Im supposed to be moving to Albuquerque at the beginning of Jan and its really going to suck if i have to drive and stall and wait till i can start it again (We're talking 3 1/2 hours away and dont want it ending up being 9)

Any and i mean ANY help with this would be AMAZING!
Thanks

I've noticed lately that a lot of people have been asking for vacuum diagrams and wiring diagrams for their 3rd gens lately. These diagrams are available online at Autozone.com. They basically have the whole Haynes manuals (Chilton's manuals are similar) online free of charge. It covers pretty much all of the basic and general repair procedures. The Haynes manuals do leave a lot to be desired in certain areas, but they are great for the average do-it-yourselfer.

I would highly recommend a factory service manual (available at www.helminc.com) if you need a more detailed repair guide.

Here's just a sample of what they offer online:

Sounds more like a overheating problem rather than engine problem.
What temp is your gauge showing?
Does coolant circulate properly ( when rad cap is off and thermo open)
Is water pump good? Belts tight ?
Do you lose coolant?
What condition is your radiator / block in? Been flushed out lately ( EVER? )
Front of radiator clean to allow decent airflow? Lottsa rubbish gets jammed in here

You say you had the top apart.
Is timing set correctly? Wrong timing will make engine run hot

yeah I flushed everything out when i had it all apart. Orig Rad (seems to be fine) as far as i can tell the coolant flows like it should. I thought at first it was leaking from the bottom but turned out my res had a crack in the bottom and thats where my leak was lol! But i just thought about it after i read this, I noticed a few weeks back that it was leaking a little where the hose meets the thermo housing cut a little of the hose off where it seemed cracked a little and re-fastened it....still seems to leak a little bit...too much pressure and thermo not opening maybe?

As for the timimg the does make sense ive had a HECK of a time trying to get it set just right but read an article that should help me out so keeping my fingers crossed on that one, messing with that this afternoon

Oh and forgot to mention my temp guage dosent really work, most the time its just sitting there doing nothing and sometimes it spikes all the way up....the wiring on this car is a mess.....the whole thing has been a mess since i got it.....but slowly getting there. I love my camaro but i seem to remember my 55' GMC being a whole heck of a lot easier to work on....for obvious reasons lol

im gonna agree with vetteoz. your car is overheating and you need a functioning temp gauge. the temp gauge is a simple circuit. the sending unit sits in the driver side head, between the #1 and #3 cylinders. it has a single green wire that hooks to it and drives the gauge. from the sounds of it, that wire is disconnected and randomly grounds out while driving.
