another oil sender wiring question

I did the search but didn't find what I'm looking for.

My 82 was a 305 crossfire car. The P.O. put in a 350 out of a 75 truck. The oil sender and the temp sender are not hooked, no temp sender (no prob on thet one). The oil sender in the motor is a single wire bell type. The only wire I can find in that area is a 3 wire plug. According to what I found on search, the original could have beeen a 3 wire. Here's my 2 part question.

With the sender unhooked the gauge is pegged passed 60. Shouldn't it read 0? Or is my gauge fubard.

Which of the 3 wires do I use on the sender? Supposedly the other two are for the fuel pump safety disable. I know the sender is probably not the right one, but it's easy enough to get one.
