1990 3.1L V6 Running Rich

It's fouling out the spark plugs real fast, doesn't go over 55mph. Changed out the Iac valve, tps sensor, (didn't adjust them yet) and catalytic converter. I also did a full tune up. It was sitting for at least 2 years. I know nothing about cars and i'm trying to change that but for right now I need to get some advice. The body is in real good condition. 109kmi on the tranny/body. Supposedly 60kmi on second engine. How much would be a fair asking price to sell it when i get it running.

Hook up a fuel pressure gauge, it should be 36-42psi running, 45-48psi when the engine is off. It should hold pressure when off, if not, then you have a leaky injector or a regulator thats torn.
Make sure the vacuum hose to the map sensor is good.
Check the ecm grounds.
Do a resistence check on the coolant temp. sensor, at different temps.

Sweet, Thanks for replying!. I will check these things out. I think we checked the fuel pressure and it was fine but i'll double check, if these things check out what else could it possibly be?

You also need to ohm out your injectors. This is much easier than checking fuel pressure and takes 1/4 the time, so i would do this first. All you need is a multimeter. Make sure to check it both cold (before running it) and when warmed up. Is the check engine light on?

I think it has been coming on and off, i had a guy pull a code for the distributor but i think that was triggered by a friend of mine trying to adjust the base timing incorrectly. He was rotating the distributor and another friend told me that's the wrong way to do it. I think it was code 043

Well you can advace/retard the timing that way, but to be done correctly it needs to be done with a timing light. Time it correctly with a light and go from there, itll make it 1000x harder to diagnose and fix with the timing out of whack.

When it fouls the plugs out, your talking about blackening them, right? like burnt? or running rich? Or are they white?

Black88z, what are you talking about? Checking fuel pressure is way easier the ohming the injectors. All you have to do is hook up a gauge!
Ohming them hot & cold is a good idea though.
Check your timing w/ a light. Make sure it advances when you rev it too. Retarded timing effects the engines ability to make low vacuum, the map sensor see the low vacuum & tell the ecm to richen up the mixture.

He was using a timing light, and the spark plugs are black, dripping with fuel

Re: 1990 3.1L V6 Running Rich

Maybe its easier to do the fuel pressure test on the V6 he has, when i said that I had my L98 in mind. When i ohmed out my injectors it took like 3 min to do all of them, when i checked fuel pressure it took like 10-15min. On that V6 i could see how it would be a bit harder to get to the injectors tho, so i agree with you there.

Are they all dripping with fuel? Or just certain ones? Because to me if they they have fuel on them even after its been shut off (assuming your getting spark to these cylinders) i would think you have a leaky injector(s).
