Car idles rough in park?

Okay my car used to have idling issues and would stall out. But all the vacumm leaks have been fixed and runs perfect doesn't stall....in drive.

However, when I shift my car from drive to park the idle will jump up to 7 and will keep going down to 5 then powering back up to 7 and repeating. (pretty much jumping between 5 and 7 and I can hear it real loud).

Also wanna note that my car shifts real bad from park to drive- like my car bounces. In drive, my car sits perfect at 5.

Thats an oddball. What have you already checked? What were the results?

Replaced EGR, Idle Air Control, PCV, and fixed all the vacumm leaks. My Mass air Flow is good. My car used to stall out at lower speeds (especially when coming to a stop) but no longer does this. Runs good just shifts from park to drive real bad and idles rough in park. I find it odd as well.

Re: Car idles rough in park?
Hmm. Well if it does this ony when shifting to park and the car drives fine i would think its a tranny problem, not necissarily an engine problem. It could be though. But im kind of at a loss on this one, ill have to brainstorm on it for a while lol

SES light on?

Have you checked your TPS? o2 sensor? Honestly im just kinda shooting stuff out here, im not sure what would cause this. The surging in the idle is most likely engine related so im trying to think of what that could be.

Yea this why I'm confused too because I wanna say its a Transmission issue but the surging has nothing to do with the tranny.....perhaps I have both problems lol?

SES light is not on.

edit: oh yea I do have a o2 sensor. was thinking of something else lol. I have yet to check that sensor...

Lol, that would be your problem right there if you had no O2 sensor! Haha

You could very well have 2 problems tho. My bet is the surging is engine related, the shifting 2 and from park is tranny.

What makes it more difficult is that it runs right in every gear but park..

Well I'm getting a new exhaust (flowmaster 80 series) probably won't solve anything. But I'm gonna replace that o2 sensor and then get back to this thread.

Re: Car idles rough in park?
wanna bump this thread...

any chance that a faulty fuel pump could be causing my problems?

edit: Also what regulates the oil pressure in a 85 Camaro? I read that if an engine has low oil pressure then its possible for the ECU to shut off the fuel pump...which would stall my engine I presume.

You should check your pressure before wasting time to throw parts at it.

34-47~ psi.

If it has normal power off idle its most likely not a fuel pump issue.

Okay my oil pressure seems to stay at 15 and moves up a little bit (maybe like a hairline) when I hit the gas even over 4000 rpms.

What does this mean for me?

Re: Car idles rough in park?
I was having similar issues with the oil pressure staying really low on my 305 tbi but not the idle fluctuating... I took the valve covers off to put new gaskets on and i lost a quart of oil... heads clogged bad from p/o never changing oil and leaking valve stem seals. had them cleaned up and oil pressure went back up passed 30.... idle improved alot too...

Did you replace the valve stems or just had them cleaned?

Re: Car idles rough in park?
At first i just scraped out tons of gunk and cleaned out the drain holes in the head. then did a seafoam treatment in the oil followed by an oil change.. Worked for about 3 weeks. Then had them serviced at city motor supply in dallas.. Thats lasted a while now.. Pretty cheap since i fix their chain hoists all the time. I had 170k miles so it was due for a head job anyways.. But it smoothed up my surge/stumble i had at the stop light...
