IYO, which exhaust would be best?

Im thinking this will be more of an opinion based thread.

My cars in the shop now, waiting to get a leaky fuel tank fixed. The car is an '88 irocz, 5.7 tpi.

When i get it back Id like to really dive into working on it. As it sits now its 99% stock, i have reason to believe its got an axle-back on it though, the headers are stock and the pipe up to the muffler looks stock (2 1/2in and crush bent piping) but the dual tips dont look stock at all (theyre about 3in and cut at a steep angle) and where the tips go into the muffler are some very sloppy welds and pipe clamps. I dont remember if there were any welds like that on the inlet side of the muffler, so im not sure if its a stock or aftermarket muffler.

I found a guy on CL that has some sbc shorty headers for $50. Nothing wrong with them, just wants to get rid of them.

I dont plan on doing a crazy amount of work on this car, no rebuild any time soon, no stall convertor.

My current plans are to put K&N's in it, open up the air filter box, cut out the MAF screens, go to 8mm plug wires, bosh platinums, i'll upgrade coil, i have a brass terminal cap and rotor, FPR, throttle body airfoil. Im also looking for an aluminum driveshaft, and im going to get wider rear tires. I also have a shift kit waiting to be put in. Thats all i can think of for right now

But my real question is this:

After doing the mods i just mentioned, would i be ok with sticking with a 2 1/2in Y pipe? If i do this ill get madrel bent piping for it so its a little less restrictive than the crush bent, but i cant find any dual exhausts for under $400 and thats way over my budget.. So if I put those $50 shorties on it and get mandrel bent piping to the muffler would that be sufficient?

Sorry for the long post. Thanks for the input guys.

You don't need a coil. You will be better off with the factory one. I don't believe they even make 3" ypipes. I would not use platinum plugs on these cars either. Use the regular Bosch 7985 part number with headers. Second of all, a true dual exhaust on these cars is probably going to give you clearance issues, they are not designed for these cars and you will have to get one custom made and bent by a shop. Maybe the shop can build you a dual ypipe like the one that comes as a G92 option on some thirdgen Camaros. It is called the N10 option.

Re: IYO, which exhaust would be best?

Well anything custom made is going to be way out of my budget anyways, so i cant even consider that. I was wondering about the clearance issues but i thought ive seen people with duals on these camaros so i figured it must not be a problem.

Why not use platinums? Ive seen alot of people on here highly recommend them on our cars (especially L98 like mine).

So you think i should get the $50 shorties, put them on, then get a mandrel bent Y pipe and ill be good? Im just looking for the best free-flowing exhaust for as little as possible, and like i said I wont be doing any real heavy mods or anything (probably will even keep stock cam as this is my daily driver and i need it to get as good of gas mileage as possible.)

Because there have been problems with platinum plugs on these cars. Supposedly lack of power. Anyway, you may need shorter plugs anyway because of headers. Most headers require a short style spark plug. What headers are you planning on using? Also, 90 degree spark plug boots/wires may be needed or you can burn up your plug wires really easy. You should always match the ypipe to the headers . First find out what the part number and brand is of your headers and THEN buy a ypipe that is designed specifically for those headers. It is much , much easier that way.

Re: IYO, which exhaust would be best?

this custom side pipe job i had done sounds great and looks great. i won an award at the Carlisle GM nationals show 2011 for it. only cost me 250bucks. 2 glasspacks from magnaflow (27bucks a piece) then paid for the short pipes (2 1/2" piping) and then the welding job(i dont have a welder so i had someone else do it) if you cant see the pic good just go to my profile and look.

this was just my and custom jobs always make you feel better knowing the next guy wont be driving round with ur same exhaust kit you just put on.

Re: IYO, which exhaust would be best?

Thats actually a real good price, i was thinking it would be alot more. I think im going to stick with a full exhaust setup tho, i like how the tips on mine look.

What do glasspacks do? I know they alter the sound, but is there any performance gain? Does it hinder performance? Does it make it sound better/worse?

Re: IYO, which exhaust would be best?

glasspacks have a distinct sound. not really sure of power gains but they are an alternative to mufflers. in my state...NY the law says you have to have a muffler. glasspacks are considered a muffler. they still provide the same amount of back pressure as a muff but have their own sound. i will try to get a vid clip of mine so you hear it.

Re: IYO, which exhaust would be best?

Ok, cool. thanks. I appreciate that alot. You said they were only $27 a piece for glasspacks? And i can use them as a substitute over a muffler?

Would there be a performance gain replacing a stock muffler with a glasspack?

check this link out:

http://www.summitracing.com/search/?...lasspack&dds=1

they also give you tech info on glasspacks and i just read that "yes they will give power gains". i have the magnaflow ones which cost 31bucks, but cherry bomb makes them for 27 or you can even try the summit ones for 22bucks.
