Isky 264 cam

I built my engine about a year ago, I bought a cheap speedpro cam with 214/224 @.050 duration cam with .442/.465 valve lift. The problem is I don't have any low end power. Once I reach 3 grand the thing pulls like hell but the engine usually stays under 4800 rpms. After some research it seems my cam has too much duration due to my ~8.5:1 compression. So I was wondering will this isky 264 cam give me my low end power back? All opinions appreciated.

Specs on my setup:
Goodwrench crate motor
bored .020 over
Replacement .020 stock slug pistons
Smogger heads(76cc, 1.94/1.50)
Stock crank(polished)
Holley street dominator intake(dual plane)
Edelbrock 600cfm carb
TH350 with a shift kit
3.27 9 bolt rear end.
Hedman LT's W/O cat 2.5" to medium powersticks

Re: Isky 264 cam

You would be much better served just finding a new set of heads. That cam you have is a pretty mild one and is decent for a street car.

You would be totally opposed to finding a set of 083 heads? Or even some 081 or 416 heads?

Re: Isky 264 cam

I agree heads would help me 110% The only problem is one of my head bolts stripped while torquing it down. I took the cheap way out and tapped it the next size and torqued it down. It started to strip again so I stopped and still no blown headgasket. I'm just afraid if I pull the heads off I'm going to be building a new engine. I'm just going to wait to build a new engine, before I mess with the heads.

After putting the isky cam and my cam in a desktop dyno, they made similar numbers. I talked to a friend about it and he suggested getting a stall. Which I had totally overlooked until now. I'm going to call hughes and talked to them about which stall I should get for now.

Keegan, your motor sounds like a clone of mine when I got it, but Holley, 2.77's, 700r4, no headers. Had that cam in it. Went flat, put new identical cam in it but shaved embarrassing 624's down to 68cc for about 9:1.

Then it 'pulled like hell' from 2500 (woohoo 500rpm lower), but still no bottom end. Second cam went flat, replaced with an XE262. This filled in the blank space, pulls nicely from idle now. Not a fire breather of course, heads gotta go someday, waiting for the cracks to happen...

Well if my cam goes flat then I guess I have a good excuse to replace it. I agree with you about the 'Pull like hell' because at the moment my car is a slug until 3k. After 3k is a different story

Comp cams recommended one a little bit smaller than the one you have, but still the XE series. I don't want to pull everything apart and put a new cam in, for it to be a little bit different. That is why I think the easiest route until I can build a new engine would be ~2500 torque converter to get me by and an auxiliary cooler for my transmission.

Re: Isky 264 cam

thats a shame you cant swap heads, but I dont blame you for being a little concerned about it.

A stall will probably help, though. Not ideal, but in your case probably the best idea.

Re: Isky 264 cam

I rushed the build to try to get it on the street when I first built the motor. If I would have waited another year it would have a beefy engine..

I called hughes today and told them what I had. They recommend the 2500, which is what I was looking at. The guy said with my car it would flash around 2500-2700. I might give TCI a call and see what they say.

I am dropping the transmission to put in my B&M shifter so I figure why not put a stall in there too. Only problem is I'm not sure what size transmission cooler I should put in. I've been looking at the tru-cool LPD transmission cooler kits and they seem to be pretty good. Will I need some serious cooling or can I be cheap and buy a copper 5 tubing cooler?
