1982 Z28 Crossfire Won't turn over
1982 Z28 Crossfire Won't turn over
I have a 1982 Z28 with the crossfire injection engine that has 66,000 miles. I just had a new fuel tank installed, drove it home and it sat for a week. When I got in to move it the next week, the engine turned about 3/4 of a revolution and stopped. The starter would only click, so I replaced the battery, and it did the same thing. I then replaced the starter, but there was no differerence. I could turn the engine counterclockwise but it would stop at the same place each time. The last time I drove the car, it wasn't making any noises, and it drove well. Now, once it sat for a week, it will not turn over. One of my friends told me that I could have spun a bearing in the engine, but it was not noisy at all. This car has been in our family since new, and I hate to give up on it. What else could cause an engine to do this? I took the plugs out, but it made no difference. The oil has no metal shavings in it, and it wasn't low. I'm going to try another starter this weekend, but I am sure that won't make any difference. Could a bearing have gone bad without any noises from te engine?
Thanks,
Gary

Seems a bit extreme to go from won't crank to spun bearing and giving up on the car. Check the big 3. Do you have fuel, air, spark? Recheck the starter. Check nuetral safety switch. If you do give up on it, sall me, I'll haul it away for you. What color is my new car?

i had this condition a month or so ago. mine was a bad ground from the neg. batt. post to the block. as soon as i cleaned it up and re-bolted it to the block it fired right up. you wouldn't believe the problems a bad ground can cause. go through the starting/charging system front to back and check all components and cables. if your turning that motor by hand alone good luck. put a socket on the nut at the front of the crank and spin the motor with a ratchet.

I used a lever to reverse the flywheel about 3/4 of a revolution then tried the starter. It would turn that distance and stop. Then click. I reversed the flywheel again, and used the starter and it stopped at the same point. So, that is why I asked if it could be a bearing or what else it could be. It ran fine when I parked it, then this occurred. If it's a bearing, it'll need an overhaul.

try spinning the motor from the front with a ratchet. if it was a spun bearing i don't think it would do that.

It will turn the engine the same distance as it does when I use a lever to move the flywheel. I had the car on ramps, and I removed the dust cover from the transmission, used the lever to turn the engine backwards and it would travel and then stop. I tried the ratchet, but it wouldn't turn. So, I backed the flywheel about 3/4 of a revolution, and I was able to turn the engine with a ratchet to the same point where it abruptly stops.

the only thing i can think of that would cause that might be a valve stuck open and the piston is hitting it. or some sort of obstruction in the cylinder. you could check the valves by pulling the valve covers and seeing if one is hung up. the other possibility is you might have lost the timing chain, which is unlikely.
