Cam question

Ok guys, here's what i have. I picked up a gm 350 short block for $150. It's a made in mexico 4 bolt main casting # 10066036. It was equipped with a hydraulic flat tappet cam. I also have my stock 89 tpi 305 with a bad wrist pin still installed in my iroc. I wanted to know if i wanted to run a roller cam in the 350 is a retrofit required? I want to run a hot cam but i'm not ready for the huge cost of the retrofit kit. Also, I would welcome some cam suggestions. Flat tappet or roller, depending on what i find out here. Car has mild port work on the tpi and stock iron heads which i'll be re-using. Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't bother with roller lifters in a flat tappet block. If you have killer heads and were spinning it to 7500 RPMs, then retrofit roller lifters would be justified. Your money is better spent on a good aftermarket flat tappet cam/lifter set.

Just be sure to use a high-ZDDP oil with flat tappets. http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/zrt.aspx

Yeah i'm using the stock tpi heads. So what kind of specs would i be looking for in a flat tappet cam? I'd like the idle to be as lopey as possible while retaining streetability. I'm not ready to upgrade the heads yet. I'm putting this thing together a piece or two at a time. I have a 58mm throttle body, SLP runners, and hedman 1 5/8 hedders with 3 inch collecters if that helps.

Re: Cam question

Also, does anyone know how much lift the stock springs are good for and is 114 degrees of lobe seperation to much for my application? I was looking at this.
