ok, tomorrow i will dropping in my engine, the flexplate i pulled out of the car was very chewed up.

so my question is can i use a 400 flexplate if i pull the counterweights off? the engine is neutral balanced

Are you willing to risk having to pull the engine or transmission again to save $30?

You may be able to remove the weight, but there wouldn't be any guarantee that it would be properly balanced afterwards.

Factory 400 flexplates are 168 tooth. 3rd gens used 153 tooth. Unless your block wasn't drilled/tapped for the offset starter mount, you should use a 153 tooth flexplate.

 

i have a new 153 tooth flywheel and had it on once before, the starter didnt line up. do i need a different starter for the 153 tooth?

 

ok the reason is i have an offset starter, thats why i need a 168 tooth flywheel. does the parts store have one thats not weighted? and what make/model would i give them?

EDIT- after thinking about it, the starter didnt work because it was a 400 block, now the 350 will take the 153 and a stock type starter
