hey guys here's my problem after several months of procrastinating my transam finally started the engine was idling a little rough so i set the timimg again since the last time i forgot to tighten the distributor and adjusted the carb and closed the hood just then i hear a loud sound like a hammer hitting an I beam i'm thinking oh $h#t broke a motor mount and dented my hood i kiled the engine checked and the motor mounts are good i go to turn on the engine and when it does there's a really loud knock and since i'm fairly new to the world of mechanics i as wondering if you thirdgen gurus can help me

Well I wish I had good news for you but first check all your pulleys and water pump for problems.

 

did that all pumps and pulleys are secure and not loose

 

Will the engine turn over and run or is it seized up?

 

turns over and runs but there's a loud knock and i dont know what it is

 

Try removing the belts, and see if it quits making noise. Only for the moment.

 

Yes try what Stevo posted and is the noise still there when it is running.

 

I have also heard of bad smog pumps making awful noises when they fail. I don't believe your engine has walked into the light yet. Not at this point.

Well if it turns out that my engine is a goner. then I guess I have no choice but to go 350.

 

305's go to the other place anyway. This would be an excellent time to do what gman suggested. Tons of 350's out there.

I think the 2 bold will take no more than 500 hp. Therefore, I don't think it matters one iota. If you find a good deal on a 2 bold 350, than I'd go for it.

 

Take the valve covers off and see if you bent a pushrod. You might want to check the rocker arms too while you're in that area. I wouldn't give up on the motor just yet.

does the knock happen over and over again as the engine is running? or just one loud one?

 

My suggestion to you. GO take the car out, hammer the **** out of that little 305 until she blows. That's why I am doing to mine. Then build a 350 and smile haha.

 

OK Gman we need more information on the knock. Like davidjr posted is the knock over and over or just once.

Alright if it was mine I would drain oil and then slowly pour it through a paint strainer. I would look for pieces of brass and metal. Then it would be time to yank it out.

 

Did you check the push rods and rocker arms yet? On my 94 Z28 I had a noise that was loud, Turned out to be an exhaust gasket. So before tearing anything else apart, I'd look check around the manifolds, or headers, depending on what you're running.

 

I was thinking the push rod thing myself. I know with stock or tired valve springs you can float out with too high of revs, and a push rod can loose contact with the rocker. Not to uncommon for small blocks, and not hard to fix.

 

Have you done anything in the way of following up on any of these good suggestions.

 

good advice but I already started taking apart the engine yesterday. And before I bought it the car was parked for 14 years so I think it's time to replace anyway.

 

I just told a friend of mine about my engine problem. And he offered to sell me an ls1 from his camaro for $400. The only problem is that it has a blown head gasket. Should I go for it and if so will it bolt up to my 700r4

 

guess what guys I pulled my engine out and just found out that the hunk of iron was rebuilt before and that loud a$$ knock whas the starter which came loose and got thrown into my exhaust pipe and some how left a hole the size of a silver dollar

 

Well, that must have been a relief. Too bad you had to pull the motor the find this out.

 

big relief but its not bad now i can degrease the engine and bay there's years of crap built up in there

 

Good news. I was just going to suggest a possible cracked flexplate.
