Wanting to beef up my 305 H.O., but-

I have just bought my first T/A and love to hear a cars' engine beat. My problem is I don't want to have to change much to give it that raw sound. How big of a cam can I go before I have to add a stall (would love to go over 500 lift)and why won't a Chevy 305 cam work,is it not the same as a Pontiac 305? Can I put timing gears in instead of timing chain? Can I get rid of the A.I.R. pump if I add headers? And what would the best tranny kit would be best for my 700r? Any and all would be grateful. I am 48 and this will probly be my last HOT ROD and want it to rock but on a very skimpy budget.

It is a Chevy engine, in a Pontiac body. Any SBC cam will physically install. Lift has nothing to do with sounding nasty, that's entirely about overlap, which is a serious problem with your engine's computer. Do you want it to sound fast, or do you want it to actually be fast? Or you could could do a technically-illegal conversion to carburetion, then run as nasty-sounding a cam as you wish, but it still wouldn't be truly fast. It really doesn't take much to get a mildly noticeable idle and keep the computer. And for sound, doing headers and a cat-back will go a long way.

You for got to mention option 2. Pull the 305 and put a big block in it. That is what I did and everything fit fine and the car is actuall as fast as it looks. But it wasn't cheep. But if you do try to beef up the 305 please keep us informed on what you did. I have a 91 Camaro convertible with a TBI 305 and when I replace it with new I would like to beef it up alittle but I want to keep it computer friendly.

Hey guys. I have an 85' t-top ta. Its a fully loaded recaro/ ta option car.

It's got an l89 w/ tuned port injection, 700r4 trans, Borg Warner 9 bolt posi and 4wheel disk.
I upgraded with hi flow fuel pump, Bosch maf, Bosch platinum +2 plugs, msd hei external coil kit, msd 8.5mm super conductor wires, ecoil 50,000 capacitor coil, custom cold air kit w/ k&n filter and a nice dual cat back exhaust.

I was going to pop a cam in it, but its hella fast and rumbles beaytifully. The catback was a night and day difference. And best of all, no check engine lights.

yes I would love to install a bigger cam but not so big it messes up the puter, even if i went bigger on the motor wouldn't that have something with the computer? I am trying to keep everything basically stock minus a few engine mods, because the car is all original and very little rust living on the coast of NC, Oak Island.

and what kind of troubles would i have putting timing gears in it instead of a chain. I love the sound of noisy timing gears.

going with headers, how does that work with the air pump that connects to the stock manifold? also why did they do away with the bird on the hood in 88?
