Would it be cheaper to...?

First of all I'd like to say I'm not sure if this is the right forum cotegory, if it is not I'm sorry.
But I was wondering would it be cheaper to buy a rolling chasis and build my own 3rd gen, or buy one? I'm pretty much looking at a $4,000 budget. If it is cheaper to buy one can anyone lead me to websites where they are cheaper? I've looked on the forums here for sale, and theres not anything I could afford, ebay is also to exspensive, and on craigslist they all pretty much need to much work for under $4,000. Any help is appreciated, thank you.

P.S. This would by my "own" first car, so any tips on the 3rd gens to would be helpful.

Depends on where you are; but in most places outside of the Salt Belt, $4k will buy you a HELLA NICE one of these cars.

Re: Would it be cheaper to...?

My brother picked this hog up 6 months back for 2 grand. It was owned by an older lady who rear ended somebody. If you know what you are looking at you can see a slight ripple in the passenger rail (the last 8" of it). It was on a frame machine and drives 100% strait. Entire car was repainted. He bought it bone stock with 90k miles; 305/700R4. It was completely restored after the accident. Not a spec of rust, absolutely gorgeous 3rd gen. He's working on a flat tappet 383 with trickflow heads - should be done in a few more months.

Obviously buying somebody's built car is cheaper than building your own but I refuse to do such a thing unless the price is right. You never know what parts are really inside the motor or who assembled it.
