Re: fuel pump dead?
fuel pump fuse would be obvious starting point
if that checks out then run 12V to the direct pump and see if it runs ;
if it does then your problem is with pump control , not the pump itself
For what ?
Does it have full time power on one of the heavy wires?
Does it get power on one of the smaller wires when key is switched on ?
Will pump run if you jumper the relay plug???
What did you "check " ?

Also try checking your Oil Pressure Switch. it is a sensor right above the Oil filter. if the oil pressure drops below a certain point the fuel pump quits. and if it is bad, the fuel pump wont prime until you spin the engine over enough times that it builds up oil pressure. if that doesn't make sense let me know i can try explaining it better.
edit: just noticed you have a '90 camaro. not sure if the pressure switch was on those or not. if you don't know what i am talking about, let me know, i can explain it better and maybe include a pic.

Re: fuel pump dead?
I had the car die on me while driving because of this. thought it was the fuel pump. 6 hours later i got the pump out and realized it was good. then i tore apart the interior following the power line thinking it was broke because i wasn't getting any power to the pump. needless to say i spent the better part of a day pulling the rear end and interior apart on my car looking for a problem that was by the oil filter. i went to Auto Zone to see if any of those guys had any ideas. they didn't but a random customer overheard me and told me what it was. I really got lucky that I ran into that guy.
I know what you mean though, every time i get in the car I'm saying "please baby, just start for me." She really has a mind of her own and can be stubborn sometimes. Acutally my brother was trying to start the car to move it around the yard las summer and it wouldn't start at all. I walked out and turned the key and she fired right up. She must just like me
