Bypass heater..help! anti freeze leak
alright so my 86 IROC started to have a anti freeze leak today and i tracked it down to the heater or heat exchanger or whatever its called in the car in the dash on the passanger side its leaking from the dash down onto the carpet. my question is how can i re route the lines so i basicly bypass my heat the to stop the leak... i take the hope that runs along the valve cover and route it to the hose coming out of the radiator that runs to the back of the motor on the frame right??

If this is a temporary measure, which I must assume it is in Wisconsin, you can simply take both hoses off the heater core at the firewall and join them together. Do a better repair when you have time.

Well, many will not recommend this but you can try alumaseal. I have the same problem, and I need to replace my core also, but it worked! Been running it this way for about a year now. It may start leaking any time now, and it's on my to do list, but I am driving it, and I'm running the heater. I have a by pass devise I soldered up about 10 years ago (two copper elbows), and I may implement this if I have to until problem is resolved.

just jion the two hoses on the firewall together and fix the heater core when you have time. Be prepared to take your entire dash apart mostly..i had to on mine but its a 91 and i think the screw placement changed a little making it more difficult. good luck

I wouldn't introduce something into your coolant system that you don't have too. Easiest way is to join the hoses and save the money to put towards replacement parts.

Re: Bypass heater..help! anti freeze leak
Since this is a cobbled up short term fix, if you use a junction that's the larger size, you might be able to coax the smaller hose over the tube with a little lube. If your using a smaller junction, you can increase the OD of the tubing with tape to seal up the larger hose.
