1984 trans am lost all electrical while driving
I have a 84 15th aniversery ya that just quit on me while driving. I lost all electric to everything except cigarette lighter. No dash lights or anything. I had just put in a new battery a few days before and my son used it to jump his car. I think he may have crossed cables but not sure. Any question sugestions, is there fused links or a main fuse, eco? I am not familiar with these cars.

Lets get more detail. What has power and what does not have power?
Motor does it crank?
Lights?
Dash?
Gauges?

The only power I have is to the cigarette lighter, no other lights, no cranking, no clicking. Its like someone removed the battery. The headlights where on when it quit and they went out when everything else did, they stayed In up postion until I shut switch off, now nothing. I can run a hot wire to individual fuses and get some things to operate. Basically I have lost power From battery to fuse panels.

Check the continuity of the fusible links down by the starter.

That would be my first guess, but yo uhave power to the cig lighter. That means that the fuse panel has power because the cig lighter should be on the same fuse as the radio. Now if the the cig lighter has been rewired from factory, I dont know. But generally check the fusible links by the starter. Then work your way over to the C100. There will be two or three larger red wires. Those are the ones that go to the starter and power the car.

I have noticed I have dash lights as well, no engine light or dummy lights just lights to see gauges. What is c100? I will check it when I get back to car. I also found one fused link going from battery to starter and it is carrying 12 volts on both sides are there more links some place else ? Thanks for the help

The c100 is the wiring junction on the driver side firewall near the brake booster. All the connections for your car go through there. The powers from the starter also go through there to power the rest of the car.
Now that I think of it, it still could be a fusible link. There should be two to three wires that connect to the starter that carry power to the c100. One may be the issue and that is why you have partial power. I will try to get you a diagram of the c100, so that you can see what each wire is. But, those fusible links are the first place that I would check. The fusible links that I am referring to are located right at the starter. You will have the main cable from the battery on the starter post, but there will be other smaller gauge wires connected there as well. Those smaller gauge wires have the fusible links on them.

Currently at work, but here is a link to a bunch of wiring diagrams:

For the C100, the best one that I can find is in this thread about half way down in post #16:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/elec...pi-wiring.html
The power distribution (A4 and G5) should have power at all times. If you notice, G5 is for lights, so this one may be good where the A5 may be the issue...Those are they two that come from the starter(I also beleive there is a third. Will confirm)

Re: 1984 trans am lost all electrical while driving
Thanks guys for all the help. I was finally able to get car on a lift and found that the hot wire from the starter to fuse panel had rubbed thru and shorted out in the little section of steel tube right above the starter. Replaced it an am back in action!
Thanks again,
Shane
