White smoke, smells like gas
So my troubles continue, I have replaced the injectors, managed to get it all back togethor and started, will say it is hard to start cranks and cranks b4 it starts
I have a really strong gas odor and white smoke coming out of the tail pipes, do I have a bad injector? what is a relative easy test to do to try and isolate the cause?
car is a 88 trans am gta, 305 5 speed, TPI
thanks in advance to all

pull the plugs and look for wet ones. you might be able to find the leaking or stuck open injector by doing a ohm reading.

I assume this is tpi, you might pull the fpr vacuum hose and check for fuel. If the is fuel dripping out of the hose the fpr diaphragm is ripped.

Re: White smoke, smells like gas
Thanks for the help, it is really appreciated
I have gas in my oil, I am hoping its from the leak test I did after replacing the injectors, as I did have a few leaks after installing, hoping that is the cause of the gas in the oil. I will be draining the oil tonight, re-fill and run it for a few check oil for gas, re-drain if needed.
My question now is there some type of cleaner i should be running, I know some places offer a oil flush service, should i be getting this done?
also the car was running for about ten minutes with the gas in the oil, is it possible further damage was done? should i be concerned? is there something i should look for?
many thanks to all in advance

Re: White smoke, smells like gas
the gas going past your piston rings thins out the oil so lubrication protection is decreased. You might want to figure out witch injector or injectors are the issue repair that and then change the oil. you can do prime ups of the fuel system bye cycling the bey for the 2 sec pump prime. the gas is a crank case flush fore sure.

Re: White smoke, smells like gas
Perfect, thank you for the help
I have stopped the leaks, or at least dont have any gas leaking out of the rail or around any of the injectors anymore
I guess if i get gas back after changing the oil then I know there is a problem with one of the injectors?
is there a product i can buy to clean the gas outta the motor after i change the oil, or is it best to take it to a shop and have them perform a flush?

Just change the oil and watch for the level increasing. Just change the oil and filter and you will be set . no need to run through a flush you just flushed the engine with gas.

Re: White smoke, smells like gas
So I cahanged the oil and filter now the damn car doesnt even turn over
I am just about done with this car, I fix one thing and then something else breaks
What the heck could be wrong with it now? It doesnt even turn over, it makes a quick attempt to try and crank but that is it
battery is reading, almost 13V on gauge, havent tested battery yet
confirmed all wires on starter are tight, grounds all check out fine, any suggestions?

Re: White smoke, smells like gas
I'm sure there's a much more correct term, that's just what I have always called when enough fluid gets down into the cylinder and hydraulically prevents the piston from moving up if the valves are closed. In this situation, I don't think it's a big possibility, but I wanted to throw it out there just in case.
Sorry for any confusion I caused, if you let me know the correct term for that condition, I'll try to refrain from using my own made up shade tree terms lol.

Re: White smoke, smells like gas
hydro lock is the correct term for an engine that won't turn over due to 1 or more cylinders being filled with a liquid.
1 or more injectors leaking can & will hydro lock a motor as will a leaking fuel pressure regulator or a intake or head gasket leaking coolant into the cylinders.
hydro locking a motor by driving thru deep water can bend rods, break pistons, and split cylinders.
lake, from what you've said, it definitely sounds like either an injector or regulator problem.
white smoke from the tail pipes that smells like gasoline is usually caused by the fuel pressure regulator, but the injectors can also cause it.
also, don't forget about the cold start valve. if its leaking or stuck on, it will do the same thing.

Re: White smoke, smells like gas
thank you to everyone, i really appreciate all the help
So last night I had some time to start investigating, removed plugs from cylinder 1 and 3, as soon as the plug came outta number 1 the gas just poured out, number 3 was dry
So what is the correct way to address this, should i be removing all plugs? once removed do i need to crank motor over, should this be done manually or with key in ignition?
Do i need to worry about the 'wet' cylinders now having no oil in them? as the gas would 'clean' em out
the cylinders I find gass in, does that mean the corresponding injector is no good and that i should be taking them back for replacement or can I fix it myself?
thanks in advance again

Remove all plugs to make sure there is no other injector leaking, if you haven't turned the engine over yet, video record the fuel blowing out of the plug hole, please stand to the side while recording, or you'll get sprayed. Should they claim that your ECM is at fault, then for that to be true injectors 3,5 and 7 would be leaking as well.

Re: White smoke, smells like gas
yes.
where/who did you get your injectors from?
if you don't know, there are a number of places that sell replacements.
southbay here on thirdgen is a great person to deal with, you can get a full set for less than what you would pay for 2 at your local parts house.

Re: White smoke, smells like gas
So looks like the seller has fallen off the face of the earth, seller will not respond to my emails, ebay and paypal wont help as its past 45 days
Anyone here able to fix a stuck open injector? Or anyone got 2 bosch 3, 19lbs injectors for sale?
also, I cant get the darn runners off, there is a stripped bolt on the bottom runners bolts, one on each side. Would it be ok to run 2 injectors, once I get locate replacements, without the fuel rail clips? Or any suggestions on how I can remove the stripped T40 torx bolts?
Take my advice and dont by from socal_fuel_injectors on ebay...................... well after a week n a half I got a reply, could have told me then that I have to ship old ones first, new ones would be on route if I was told that

Re: White smoke, smells like gas
sorry to hear you're having problems with the injector supplier.
get in touch with southbay08.
they have a nice mod done to their injectors that doesn't need the injector rail clips.
SouthBay Fuel Injectors
Shop: 516.442.4707 Cell: 516.492.6504
www.southbayfuelinjectors.com
info@southbayfuelinjectors.com
on the stripped torx bolts, it depends on how bad it is.
sometimes just using a good quality torx bit will work, sometimes you can get them out by using an allen wrench, sometimes you can modify a torx bit thats 1 size bigger and drive it into the bolt. also there other ways such as using a chisel or welding a nut to the head of the bolt to get it out.

Re: White smoke, smells like gas
Thanks for all the help, really appreciate it
I didnt check to c if the motor will turn over, hydro lock may have killed it, So my next question,
I currently have 2 injectors out, waiting on replacements, if I kill power to fuel pump, pull relay or fuse, can I then do the crank test, the plugs are out
And what are my chances of the motor being ok? I did try n start it 2 times, the motor wasnt cranked longer than 2 seconds each attempt, the motor didnt even crank, it did make a quick attempt to though
hopefully the motor is ok, but I have a really bad feeling
