no spark. 305

I bought my 89' i-roc z vert about six months ago and haven't had any problems with it up until now.The engine is the original 305 and has 63xxx miles on it. I decided to drive it into work one day and when I was leaving to go home the engine wouldn't turn over. Myself and a couple of buddies changed out the distributer, the ignition coil, and the ignition module to see if the engine would turn over. The last thing we had canged was the coil and then it finally turned over. We let it run for a few minutes and it seemed fine. I didn't get a mile down the road before the engine just shut off. After it shut off, I tried to restart it and it had knocked a couple of times and started shuddering and wouldn't turn over again.

If anyone has any advice or ideas on what could be causing the issue please let me know. Thanks

Re: no spark. 305

you said you had replaced it but sounds like the ignition control module which is mounted under the distributor cap.

I know that ignition control modules tend to go bad when it's hot out, but the new one I put in is less than six months old. I'll probably look into getting another one though.

Re: no spark. 305

When replacing the ignition control module you need to make sure you coat the bottom of it with the silicone or heat sink compound included before installing or early failure will occur
You can have the current one checked at autozone or some other parts places to check it. Make sure it is tested several times because heating it up causes it to fail if it's getting marginal

Re: no spark. 305

Got some new details today. Before i decided to throw more parts at it I tried starting it after letting it sit for the weekend. It started right up the first time. I let it sit for about a minute or so and then the engine just cut out again. This problem has got me at a complete loss.

That's what happens when the Ignition module is going out. It works fine cold, but after heating up during use it fails. You can take it out and get it tested for free as described. Worth trying, it's free! Just make sure they test it four or five times in a row

Re: no spark. 305

Update. I've been out of the state for a couple of weeks and finally got a chance to work on the i-roc. The good news is that the ignition module was the problem and upon replacing that the car started right up. Bad news is that i think that i swapped a couple of the distributor plugs and put them in the wrong place. If anyone has any easy or simple ways to determine where they are supposed to go that would be great.

Thanks.

89 305 Firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 (clockwise). From front to back, passenger side is 2, 4, 6, 8. Dirver side is 1, 3, 5, 7. #1 on the dizzy should be about 6 oclock.
