car does not start when i turn the the key
Hey everyone i have a problem with starting my car. it has been an on going problem. first off i just finished checking and rewiring my car which i thought was the problem. by the way my car is a 91 z28 convertible with a 96 lt1 in it. it has new starter, alternator and new battery. when i try to start the car i push the clutch in and i get a clicking like the car battery is drianed. the battery has always been on a battery tender charger. when i had this problem before i would turn the key it would click a few times but it would start. now it just clicks and does nothing. so what i did was buy a remote hand start trigger turned the key to the on position hooked up the remote to starter pulled the trigger car fired right up. now the car has been off the charger for the last three weeks since rewiring it and it started right up with the remote starter. i tryed to start it with out remote start and nothing just click click click?????? so could it be the clutch switch, the key switch or ignition coil. any help please thank you

Clean the battery cable ends, both at the battery and the other end as well

Is the large neg batt cable bolted straight to the engine somewhere, eg block, head?

Not the clutch switch or ignition switch.
Measure the voltage at the batt terminals with your voltmeter, while trying to start it. Tell us what that is. In particular, if it drops ALOT at the instant of each click, or if it stays the same throughout the whole experience.

sounds like a bad connection or wire on the start loop ... one wire comes from the battery connection on the starter (orange) , goes through the key (multi-switch under dash) switch and returns to the starter activation terminal (purple?) ... I think sometimes there's a fusable link on there too ? .... your "jump starter" leads me to believe its a bad wire .. since your jumper is probably hooked to the same exact locations on the starter ...

Re: car does not start when i turn the the key
well i checked the three orange wires with the fusible link. i used a light probe and it lit up on both sides of the fuse. i also tested the battery again. before i started it was12.83. when i cranked it it was 11.96 so the battery is fine. i turned the key about 10 times and it started tryed again and nothing. the multi switch under dash is that the clutch switch your talking about?

14V on a quiescent battery is oddly high - sure your meter's reading right?
If so, maintaining 12.45V when cranking seems a little high to me, would expect the starter to load the batt down to 9-11V, something like that. Still sounds like the starter isn't able to draw full required current, ie cable, terminal, or starter problem.

Re: car does not start when i turn the the key
Who knows where to go with the multiswitch operation. I have the same no start problem. I have installed a push button across the starter which works with the ignitional "on". Starter will not engage when key turned to the start position that is why I'm thinking my problem is in the multiswitch.

Re: car does not start when i turn the the key
Z91Bowtie1;
Thanks, actually what I did was add a starter solenoid to the setup. Napa #MPE ST82SB. Attached it to one of the oil pan bolts next to starter. Run a piece of #8 wire from the Bat side of starter to one pole of the solenoid. Remove the purple wire from the starter coil and Run a #8 wire from the other pole on the coil to the starter coil where the purple wire was. Attach the purple to the (S) pole on the solenoid. (I) pole is not used. The attachment plate is the ground to the engine. I also have had a push button so those leads remained on the coil and Bat connection on the starter for any future emergency. Works perfectly. Old wires and heat, just too much resistance to pull in starter coil, but enough to pull in the Napa coil.
