89 Iroc wont stay running

89 Iroc wont stay running
Cousin has a 89 IROC with 5.7TPI. Had a code 34. MAF sensor wires were broken inside. ran rough. Replaced MAF sensor with a new one however now the car wont start without starting fluid and you have to stay on the throttle for a while to keep it running and then it will idle by itself most of the time. As soon as I try to put the MAF Sensor/Snorkel back on the engine dies. Also sounds like the car has High Vacuum. Dont have a vacuum guage with me to check it though. could it be sucking way too much air past the maf sensor and richening the mixture way too much thus causing the engine to die? Thanks!
