Car kills when releasing accelerator
Car kills when releasing accelerator
This will happen frequently (about 50% of the time when removing foot from the gas). As soon as I release the pedal, the RPMs drop below 500 and the engine kills. I had it checked out by a generic tire and service guy. Had the fuel filter replaced (it definitely needed to be changed) and the throttle body cleaned. They drove it, said it was fine. I drove it, it killed on me. Left it with them again and they can't figure it out. The car isn't pushing any codes. Any ideas?? Thanks for anyone's help. Maybe a sensor?

Re: Car kills when releasing accelerator
my 92 RS is doing the exact same thing right now. my mechanic thinks it might be the fuel pressure regulator in the throttle body. it started acting up by idling really really low and bogging until it cut off. when i took off the air filter and disconnected the hose to the front vacuum port the RPM's went up about where their suppose to be and it purred fine so he thought it might be a rich fuel supply due to a bad regulator. But now that he has it its not acting up so he's keeping it for a few days to drive, hoping its going to start acting up so he can pinpoint the problem.

Re: Car kills when releasing accelerator
Try cleaning the TB, IAC passages, IAC pintle, and set the throttle minimum air position. Then reset the TPS (on the '87). That should cure 98% of the symptoms, if not all of them. There are probably 50 fairly detailed threads in the archives on how to do all of this.

Re: Car kills when releasing accelerator
Thanks guys I'll definitely see if I can get to cleaning all those things out this weekend. I've been driving the car all week and it doesn't kill on me any more, but the RPMs are higher (1000 in drive and 1250 in neutral with engine hot). Also the RPMs are slightly irregular. Instead of the needle at a constant read when stopped, it flutters...
