new 3rd gen owner with a question????

hey guys ,
i just acquired an 88 iroc 305 tpi with the 5 speed manual .. i traded a fully loaded ar 15 for it pretty decent shape but needs some work.. it runs great after a new radiator and iac..soo the what i cant figure out is it take about 6-7 seconds of cranking to start it and when it does start it seems either starved or choked then it levels out ... but if i leave it sit say an hour it will blow smoke on start up then quite. which im thinking valve seals sooo maybe the reason for it to crank so long is the cylinders have to much oil and its smothering the fuel to start??? other than start up and idle it runs like a champ no issues . any info would be appreciated thanks!

Could have a leaking injector. You should be able to tell the difference in smell between oil burning or rich gas burning.

I would check your fuel pressure with a gauge. It should hold pressure if the injectors aren't leaking when the motor is off.

Re: new 3rd gen owner with a question????

so went to plug in the pressure gauge and lost the tip under the plenum so i took off the plenum and i can hear what i think is an injector spraying, out of the runners .. so i went thru and put my hand over each one( runner ports) and i found two that are leaking.. one sounds likes its spraying and one is just bubbling and leaking... i cant imagine anything else it would be besides injectors , oh i couldnt test pressure because the tip is now lost lol .. but after 10 minutes the noise isnt nearly as loud ( result of low pressure from leaking) so if im wrong on any of my thoughts please inform me thanks

Re: new 3rd gen owner with a question????

What kind of a gauge looses It's tip? What motor do you have, 305, or 350? I have a set of used 22lb for the 350. 19lb are for the 305. So with the key on and fuel pump primed, you hear an injector spraying? That's not good. And by the way, with the plenum off, you still can't find your tip? Whats up with that. No pressure = leakin injector.

Re: new 3rd gen owner with a question????

haha its one from autozone that has like 6 tips for different vehicles.. its a 305 is 22lb to much?....ya the lines were pressurized and the one i could hear just from standing in front of the car looking down the other i had to put my ear to the runner to hear it, and ya in the process of trying to get the tip out with my magnetic i pushed it down and now its gone oh well 3 dollar piece. should i replace all of them or just the two?

Re: new 3rd gen owner with a question????

Nothing like being a home mechanic is there. 22lb would work, but you may need to have a aftermarket chip made or reflash the chip. I would look at rebuild or replace them all, as sooner or later the others will fail also. Here are two options; http://www.injectorsplus.com/index.asp and; http://www.southbayfuelinjectors.com/ or find a place local to you.

Not bad, If it was me, I would stick with a company that backs them up tho.

Re: new 3rd gen owner with a question????

change the intake manifold gaskets. Do not get the blue felpro with aluminum intake. Get the edelbrock ones with black sealant to be 100% sure. Same problem with two different engines. Had the damn felpros. Once switched over all was good!

What does that have to do with changing the injectors? You don't need to take the intake off for that.

Just took my dads corvette to the shop for the same thing and it was the valve seals... It didnt even want to start after running but after you let it sit it would start up fine, got the heads rebuilt. Problem solved.

Re: new 3rd gen owner with a question????

Could have bad oil seals too, but seems whats been said so far, that 1 or 2 injectors could be leaking. Hard to work or look at a car without being there.

Re: new 3rd gen owner with a question????

ya im pretty sure the oil seals need replaced but im positive a cpl injectors are shot since i can hear them thru the runners leaking... i have drivers side runner off and 4 outta 6 bolts outta the passenger side but i cant get the bottom two theres to much **** in the way so im prolly gunna have to pull the box the smog pump flows into . can i take all the injectors off once i get them pulled to a shop and have them all checked to see which ones hold pressure properly?

Re: new 3rd gen owner with a question????

Many drag cars dont even run valve seals. Its really not a big deal beyond the slight embarassment of the oil cloud and the oil consumption. Its possible it could be REALLY bad and be causing other issues, but generally it's not a big deal. It just keeps your cylinders from rusting.

Replace them when you can, but don't stress over them. They can wait.

Take them all out and have them tested. Nothing like packing 10lbs of crap in a 5lb can is there.

Re: new 3rd gen owner with a question????

well finally got some injectors and just got them put in went for a test run and it completely resolved all my issues , but it couldn't been that easy, one of the o-rings are leaking pretty decent amount , does this mean totally disassemble again? or is there a trick i might be able to get away with?

No tricks that I know of. Is it leaking from the fuel rail, or manifold? Make sure to lube the o rings with vasaline.

A must and makes it easier, Keeps the o ring from getting stuck as you slide it in. Also, make sure a old o ring isn't stuck in the fuel rail.

I put a very light coat of white lithium grease on them before installation.. It will help them slide right in and doesn't hurt anything in the future.. It is very annoying especially when one rips.
