Swapping out distributor... what are my options out there.??
So on my 84z28 I opened up my distributor and when I did the inside of it looked kind of burnt and pieces of the inside plastic literally fell off.....and I was wondering why my car ran rough..LOL....so far its still running with this distributor but was wondering what are my option out there...?
I got a 84 z28 with an LG4 engine....not looking to spend $300 on a new one budget is $150 tops....thanks!

If the distributor is in good shape mechanically, I'd just replace the cap and rotor with ones from a parts house and run it till the cows come home. Will probably run you under $30.00 at some place like Autozone.

Jeg's sells some good stuff, so yeah, it should work ok. I replaced my whole distributor in my 92 z28 with one from O'Reilly's Auto Parts. It was a complete unit, plug and play for $139.00. Granted it was a stock replacement, but I have had no issues at all with it.

I see I was thinking of either getting something like this which is cheaper...
http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS+Performan...40400/10002/-1
or this
http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS+Performan...40005/10002/-1
this one is plug in play right? and u think its better than my stock one..?will it make a difference power/driving wise?

Re: Swapping out distributor... what are my options out there.??
Is your car still controlled by the computer? If so, this distributor wont work as it is vacuum controlled on the advance. It will work fine if your car isn't computer controlled anymore. As for power, not really. Power is going to come from the heads and cam, and a good distributor will light it all off and deliver a good strong spark. Until you mod up your engine, you wont notice much of a difference, but you should get better mileage at least.

You would have to replace it with a distributor for a computer controlled car. Jeg's may sell one, I'm not sure. You might have to go to a local parts house to find one. Honestly, I'd just replace the cap and rotor and ignition module and let it rip until you are ready to mod it up. That would be your cheapest route.

sure, that was just a cap and rotor and at the least you need to replace that.

I'd go ahead and change the ignition module while you got it apart also. It surely won't hurt.

Re: Swapping out distributor... what are my options out there.??
that is the "brain" of the distributor so to speak. it's located inside the cap under the plate. 2 screws hold it in. Yours is working or the car wouldn't start, but since you are changing everything else, you might as well change it too.

not bad ima look into it...thanks!!
Re: Swapping out distributor... what are my options out there.??
There isn't really any point to replace the ICM if it's working. There will be no benefit and maybe even a loss of reliability if you replace the GM ICM with a cheap aftermarket one.
That said, as long as you're in the distributor I think it would be a good idea to remove the ICM, clean off the back of it and the area in the distributor where it mounts, then reapply new/fresh heat sink grease.
