Testing the pickup coil

I'm continuing to double check all the possible reasons why my engine won't start...I'm trying to ohm out the pickup coil and keep coming up with odd results.

I've seen the data where the pu coil is supposed to be between 500 - 1500, but better if it is between 800 - 1300 when ohmed between the white and green wires and have an infinate (1 on the meter) between the wire and ground. Mine is checking out fine against the ground, but between wires it is reading 275-315 depending on how well I can make contact. I went down the the local parts store and checked a brand new one, and it too was around 300.

Thinking my meter was wrong, I changed the battery and still same result. I borrowed another meter (better than mine!) and still came up with 300 ohms on both coils.

Am I holding the meter wrong? Not reading it right? Have it on the wrong scale? Any info would be appreciated as I'm not used to using a digital meter.

Thanks.

“1” on most meters means 1 ohm if the range selector is on the lower Ω range.

Infinite on most digital meters will be indicated by “OVER RANGE”.

Disconnect the 4 terminal connector at the distributor.

If you then have spark replace the pickup coil.

Happy Racing!
