Like stated above it could be the anti-theft system. That stupid little chip in your key. I would definitely check your grounds and wiring though.
There is also a sort of 'junction' where a lot of ignition and starter wires connect. It is located in the engine compartment behind the passenger side headlight. Look there, close to the radiator. You might have to take your air filter can out to see it. Held in by two small bolts. I would check the connections on that.
If it is the VATS I'm sorry but I have no advice. All I know is that there have been times I blamed that stupid little chip in the key, and that wasn't the problem at all.

Sounds like its the 2 wires to the vats module that are broke. (Been there done that) Its a common problem on GM cars.
Heres some info I posted for someone else also..
Looks at your security light when you turn the key on to the run position.
IF the light is staying on Its prob. a vats issue.
Easy way to test that is to measure the resistance of your key.
get a inline resistor the same ohm your key is.
Then under the dash unplug the vats connector. Loop the resistor inline and see if it starts. / light goes out.
Two good links to tell you what Im talking ya thru to do.
