305 fresh heads run-ability issues
Thanks ahead of time, Good morning thirdgen. I figured I'd do something productive with my morning so, My motor has been apart for a year. I worked at a machine shop and just couldn't get the thing back together, heads have fresh intake springs and the better half of the springs went back on the exhaust, valve guides machined multi angle valve job valves cut new seals milled not belt sanded and then sonic cleaned and assembled. I assembled the motor earlier this month and put a set of cheap shortie headers on the car. I can get it to run and idle but when I go to rev the car it breaks up. I have noticed that the harmonic balancer is junk so before i even try to start the car again that will be replaced. The pistons and cylinder walls were in surprisingly great condition no grooves or wear inside. My worry is that I had an issue with adjusting the valves I followed chilton and haynes manuals instructions on how to set them. If anyone has an idea about what else i should look into please let me know. There are no more vac leaks but im worried its something obvious that I have forgotten. So in conclusion I refer to those who know these cars in and out up and down, I'm only 21 some people on this site have more years working on these cars then i have on this earth

What exactly is it doing wrong?
What about the simple external stuff; what's the timing curve, what carb, how's it set up, does all that work right?
As far as the oil, is it coming out the front, down low, toward the right? If so, smog pump missing?

Re: 305 fresh heads run-ability issues
The oil issue was a oil pan gasket and since has been fixed. There was also a fitting near the back of the block that came up past my intake that may have been an oil pressure fitting. I have plugged that fitting due to it just shooting oil when I first tried to start the car. But back to the issue the timing was as good as I could go by listening to the motor but when I opened the throttle it had a delay before it would rev and then it would break up and I'd have to let off. The carb is an Edelbrock though now that I've worked at a shop I wish I went with holley. The carb may be the issue with the car not running proper but it was not an issue when the car was disassembled. I rerouted the starter wires to clear the headers but that should not be the issue. I do have a Q-Jet carb that i found at a swap meet that I prefer to have on my car but also prefer to rebuild it first.

What do you mean by the balancer is junk? If it has slipped this will obviously through off the balance, and the engine will shake itself to death.
If it has slipped it will also throw your timing settings off.
Get a new balancer on and get back to us.

The balancer is junk as in it wobbles a good inch and a half as the engine is running. The first time i saw that I was timing the motor and freaked out since then I refuse to try to start the car.

The old balancer's rubber was half way out of the slot so that was likely the issue. Installed a new balancer last night hope to time the motor today. Will give updates and when I get a camera man a video
