Distributor swap

I want to change the distributor in a 1985 Camaro 350 TPI. Can anyone suggest a good product? What is the advantage of an aftermarket product over original equipment? Also are any special tools required? Any tips would be appreciated.

I think...

The early years of TPI used a different cap, had to be shorter to fit down under that little cover. Give em a call and see if this one has that.

No special tools. Short 9/16" combo wrench.

I'd suggest bumping the motor over to #1 firing position (make sure it's the FIRING instance of #1 TDC, and not the EC/IO instance); raise the existing dist straight up out of there, making a note of exactly where the body was turned; hold the new one with the body the same as the old one, and turn the rotor to macth; drop it in; tweeek it as required to get the star wheel teeth to line up.

Why? What is wrong with the one you have?
(you can replace the electronics inside it for cheaper than replacing the whole unit )

Re: Distributor swap

why do you want to change it? Stock stuff is known to be better than aftermarket

Re: Distributor swap

I posted my problem in another post. The engine has no spark.
I changed the following:
Coil
cap
rotor
wires
plugs
throttle contole module
fuel pump
I had the engine control module tested at O'reilly's they said it was good

It was suggested to replace the Pickup coil. I thought if I have to pull the distributor to change the pickup coil I might as well replace the whole thing.

I'm a long way from being a mechanic. But I need to learn this stuff instead of towing it to the shop and having it done for me. It is a hobby car. Any thoughts, tips, ideas are welcome.
Thanks

Re: Distributor swap

you can use an ohmmeter to check the pickup coil-a $12 cheapie ohmmeter will be good enough.

Re: Distributor swap

Make sure you check the distributor is getting power! If it is and you have replaced everything else, it has to be the pick up coil

Re: Distributor swap
