I have a Dart SHP 400 block which I believe is setup for a roller cam. I would like a solid roller cam for it.

When I look on Comp Cams website they have hydraulic roller cams pre-fixed with an 8 (e.g. 8-xxx-8), these are for OEM roller blocks. Their cams for pre-roller blocks are numbered 12-xxx-8. For solid cams they don't seem to have a cam to fit a roller block, they only have 12-xxx-8 numbered cams.

I think these will fit with a cam button, but are there any solid roller cams for a roller block that are installed the same way as the OEM cam with a lock plate?

It will be set up the same way as a non roller block. You'll just need a roller cam button and bronze distributor gear. Also since solid lifters are heavier than hydraulics and the rpm range is typically higher you will need much stiffer springs.

 

Oh...I also use a cam sprocket with the bearing behind it.

 

See if you can get an iron or everwear gear. Avoid billet cam gears

 

Comp may be able to grind the stepped nose into a shelf solid roller grind. I would call and ask.

 

Yeah, Call comp and ask. I doubt your the first one do want to do this.

The oem hydraulic roller cam has a tighter bolt pattern for the cam sprocket so modifying the cam won't work. You would need a completely custom cam. So why not just use a cam button.

i have a nice retrofit solid roller that would work well on a 400 if interested.
Billet...60 mi on it.

 

Tossing up between a comp XR286R and XR292R, or we do have a custom grinder in town that has quite a good reputation. The AFR210s it seems have good exhaust flow and quite like symmetrical cams. I have a little while before I have to finally decide.

 

What timing?

 

There's absolutely no reason why you should go with a shelf cam when you've got that available to you. Get "the shoe that fits" as opposed to "something that's sorta close".

Your local guy can grind you a "custom"; so can Comp, Bullet, and any number of other competent grinders. $25 and it's a piece o cake.

Trick is, getting the RIGHT "custom" to match what YOUR motor wants. You can screw up just as bad with a "custom" grind as you can with a "shelf" one.

WHo knows, you might find that some "shelf" grind, just put onto the blank for your motor, might be just what you need.

Call as many as you can, be honest with em about what you've got and what your goals are; odds are, the ones that know what they're doing won't be too far off from each other, and you won't have much trouble telling who has a handle on your situation or not.
