New member + questions

Hello everyone, just bought a 1984 Trans Am with 89xxx original miles on the body and a new, fully built 383 stroker. I have no clue if the auto transmission is original to the car or what model it is but its defiantly been modified, it shifts very quickly and grabs hard. The only things wrong with it so far are vibrations at highway speeds and a loud whining coming from the transmission or the rear end when I let off the throttle. Pinion bearing shot maybe? Any suggestions on where to look would be appreciated, this is my first F-body.

Unfortunately the rpo sheet is missing but I think it is a ws6.It has a 32mm sway bar up front is this correct for a ws6 in 1984 or were they always 36mm?

Re: New member + questions

Also, was a limited slip differential standard with the ws6 package for 1984 or was it always optional? If it is supposed to have it mine is non functioning.

Re: New member + questions

careful with thinking its a ws6. that package had the thicker sway bars, stiffer springs, 16inch wheels, all around disc brakes, and a posi rear. if it's missing any of that it's not a ws6. could be a ws4 though or a ws7

Re: New member + questions

Well I think the wheels came off of a gta but im not positive,it does have four wheel disk brakes though along with the dash badge which from what i have read isnt hard to buy and just slap on the dashboard. I will jack it up tomorrow and check for posi. The reason I think it doesn't have it is because it has one really bald rear tire while the rest are almost new.

Re: New member + questions

Nice looking 84! Looks like a nice sleeper with the 383 as well!

From what I know the 32mm sway bar came in 1984 so it is probably the original. 36mm sway bars came out later. 1986 .. I think.

As far as ws6 goes, it had posi traction, 4 wheel disc, 23mm rear sway bar, 15 inch wheels, and 32mm sway bars in the front... The 15th anniversary had 16 inch wheels and a 34mm sway bar

Re: New member + questions

Btw I have the same noise/vibration issues as well... Hopefully I will get to the bottom of it this weekend...

Possibilities
1-tire needs balancing
2-wheel bearings need replacement
3-pinion bearing in differential needs replacement
4-driveshaft is bent...

Re: New member + questions

Didn't get a chance to check for posi, tried to do a throttle valve adjustment to try to correct the transmission shifting too early. The Adjustment tab was stuck and wouldn't move down, when I finally got it to move, the sleeve won't move in. Anybody ever had one get suck out like this?
