Smokes at start and smells {New Engine}
Smokes at start and smells {New Engine}
I just got a jasper 5.0 engine installed recently about 2 weeks maybe and I've had no real complaints except i have noticed that some white smoke comes out of the exhaust on start ups and there is somewhat of a gas or some kind of a smell im not sure every now and expectantly at WOT. Im getting about 13.5 mph idk if that is a clue. When i took a look at it the other day i saw the vacuum hoses weren't fully on it and it did run a bit better. I think its just running rich but I'm not sure. Im going to be taking it to the shop some time next week. Thanks for any clues.

Lets start with the color of the smoke and what it smells like. Is it oil or water?
Generally a brand new motor will smoke because the rings haven't seated.

the smoke is more like blue smoke and the smoke smells like oil i would say, every now and then like on idle at a stop light i smell a little gas. how long does it take for the seals to set?

Sounds like burning oil. The gas smell is from running rich completely independent from the oil.
Breaking in the motor all depends on driving style. Generally after 2 or 3 tanks of fuel it is broken in for the most part. Make sure you don't run it at the same rpm for a long period of time.

A new or freshly painted engine getting warm is a good smell lol.
If its real lean or rich *sounds like rich* something different
Double check your tuning FP etc to make sure all is right
If so load that puppy up with some WOT runs then decel a number of times
when you get 50 mi on it drop the hammer..not saying redline it but drive it a little hard and youre broken in.

Im smelling oil just about every time i go WOT. Is that normal? Ive put about 700 miles on the motor. I haven't really noticed the smoke on start ups except maybe once or twice. I check the engine oil level just about every day and its right under the full line so its not burning like crazy.
