New engine stalling, hard starting

car is a 1986 trans am with a fresh 1973 Chevy 350- bored 0.30 over, mild cam, with a Edelbrock torker 2 and a rebuilt edelbrock 1406. I am using the mechanical fuel pump with 2 fuel filters car will not start up right, I need to put my foot to the floor to get it started then it wont idle unless I use the gas pedal and keep it at 800 rpm. I let my foot off the gas, and it dies. wont restart unless I do the same as above.

the car has headers with h-pipe exhaust, no mufflers on it yet.

when engine is running, oil pressure is 60-80 lbs.

timing is right on

run time so far is about 5 minutes

the carb was rebuilt by a reputable builder off eBay.

Im kind of stumped, would the carb and intake be a match , like just using a gasket between the two, or should there be a spacer? it is an open plenum.

Im leaning towards a carb problem, or setup.

any help would really be appreciated......Thanks !

Re: New engine stalling, hard starting

I would start looking for a vacuum leak of somekind.

The gasket problem can be checked by spraying around base of carb with with carb cleaner or starting fluid. If it speeds the idle up that is one of your problems.
