383 Stroker Turbo Build

Ok guys its time for me to build an engine for the first time. 383 stroker!
I have a 80-85 truck block sbc 350 4 bolt main 2 piece rear main seal. The block has a deep scratch in number 8 cylinder, so i need to bore it .30 over. Its getting a Scat 9000 crank.

My HP goal is 500 or more if possible, and will get a S475 turbo in a year or two.
Is 500 or more hp possible with a 383? what pistons should i use? rods? I need lots of help!

500 all motor at crank is pretty easy but it wont like a turbo later on. 500 with turbo is incredibly easy and actually under achieving.

Yeah i want 500 without the turbo, but build strong enough to add one down the road.

I would put large heads on it, mid 9's to 1 comp and a 230's deg cam for now with wider ring gaps for boost. May make 450-475 but be a strong turbo motor.

With a s475, you looking for 750-800 hp or so? Better get a forged rotating assembly

If youre going turbo you'll need something way better than a scat 9000 crank. That's what i have in my 383 which probably wont see over 425hp. You'll want a forged crank (not cast like the 9000). The best thing to do is to buy the rotating assembly in a kit. You'll get your crank, the right rods and pistons, also piston rings and main/rod bearings.

You're looking at some $$$ with those goals. I'd say build a decent 400hp 383, then add a small turbo to it.

Theres 5.7 inch rods and 6 inch which one will work?
This kit has H-beam rods, is I-beam better?

yea as stated before a scatt 9000 crank and an s475 are not gonna work together! An s475 can max out at well over 900hp.
I don't even think that block will hold the power of a s475, You will be better off finding an 010 block from the 70's in a 2 bolt main and converting it to 4 bolt. There usualy good up to around 800 - 900 hp, otherwise you need an aftermarket block.

ok ill forget about the s475 turbo. If i got this kit with a small turbo will it hold? A forged crank is way over my budget

You don't want flat top pistons. They will give you too much compression. I doubt you'll find a kit you need since most are for NA. Just piece together the parts you need.

What heads are you using? You need to know what cc the heads are so you can pick out the right dished piston for ~9:1 compression.

Not sure on rod length, but go with a H-beam style. With a turbo, you want forged everything: crank, rods, & pistons.

You can afford a several hundred dollar turbo and the rest of a complete motor for 450-500 hp which will be thousands, but you cant afford several hundred dollar upgrade to forged crank?

Might as well forget the whole turbo idea imo. Its not cheap and if you cant do forged bottom end, its NOT worth it

I wouldn't use a non forged crank for a turbo motor. Have people done it? sure, but that still doesn't mean its going to last.
That crank is only rated for around 500 hp. A turbo in a 383 can make 500hp by accident!

Check out my thread. It's a N/A 383 build which will probably put me around 425hp/450tq (+/- 25). This build with afr heads instead of trickflows with 1.6 rockers (would put me at .565/.570 lift) would make around 450hp. You'd also have to go with bigger heads than the 195s. I'll have this dyno'd probably within the next month, so i can give you an accurate number, but one thing i can say is that this is NOT cheap. Youre looking at $6-7000 for the engine ONLY. Not including the supporting parts.
