Water pump pully doesn't line up

I did the serp setup on my 87 305 tpi camaro. Now that everything is on I went o put the belt on today and noticed the water pump pully is towards the motor about 1/2 in closer than the rest. I bought the whose kit from a guy that had it set up on his car so I figured everything was correct. Are there different pullies for the water pump? Here is a pic of how far it is off. The part number on the pulley is 14102093NH.

Re: Water pump pully doesn't line up

You may have a differnt water pump than he had. There is a short one and a long one, although Im not sure if our cars got both varieties. But I do know the belt systems changed over the run and Im not sure if all the water pumps rotate the same direction either, so it might be a good idea to go ahead and grab a new waterpump for whatever year car the serp belt is from.

Re: Water pump pully doesn't line up

The serpentine system turns the WP the opposite direction from a V-belt system, and therefore the V-belt pump won't work with a serpentine "kit" and must be changed, regardless.

Easy way to tell which way a thing rotates: if the inside (ribbed surface) of the belt goes around its pulley, it turns the same way as the crank, clockwise; if the outside surface (the back, the smooth side) goes over it, it turns the other way, counter-clockwise.

There is no such thing as a short pump for the serpentine system AFAIK, since the short pump was last used in about 1973 and the serpentine ("snake-like") system was introduced in about 1987.

Get the right pump and see if it cures itself.

Re: Water pump pully doesn't line up

Serpentine belt set ups use a different water pump then v-belt systems. It is a reverse rotation pump as it is spun in the opposite direction. Need to get a different water pump.

There is also a truck serp setup that uses a different depth pulley setup than the 3rdgen and caprice.

What year water pump should I use? I'll go to auto zone today and pick up a lifetime water pump and see if that fixes the problem.

Re: Water pump pully doesn't line up

88 - 92

Measure how far the pulley flange is from the front of the block on your current one and compare to the correct one.

If you discover that the correct pump is the same height as what you've got, i.e. the pulley depth is wrong (which wouldn't be much of a surprise), stop at yer local buzzard nest on yer way back home and pick up a pulley. Go ahead and buy the pump because you ABSOLUTELY MUST have that anyway, but be prepared that the pulley may still be wrong.

Re: Water pump pully doesn't line up

It's funny cause I bought a used pump from a guy that had a serp setup on his that was a 90 and its the same pump at the one that came with my setup. I really think its the wrong pulley. Either way ill stop at auto zone and see what there pump measures. Thanks for the help guys!

Re: Water pump pully doesn't line up

I bought a used pump

Not to be a jerk; but .... I can hardly believe my eyes. I'm actually not sure at this point that I understand English any more, if that means what I think it does. Can this be true? Did you REALLY do that??? On purpose??? With money? (or anything else of value)? While sober?

Don't ever do that. As CHEEEEEEEEEEEP as new ones are, no point in paying someone for the privilege of taking a problem off their hands.

Go ahead and get a new one; no sense in installing a problem onto your car that will likely just explode in your face and cause you grief.

Meanwhile, you can't tell if it's the right pump by looking at it. The difference in the rotation direction is a property of the impeller, which is not visible from the outside.

Buy the right thing so you don't end up with about a dozen posts over the next few days about "my car overheats", "coolant is disappearing", "there's a funny grinding noise coming from the front of my motor", etc. etc. etc. etc.

Re: Water pump pully doesn't line up

Yes I did buy a used pump... I only did this to verify what I had. It come off of a car that had a serp setup on it. No I'm not cheap at all. I have gone as far as replacing EVERY sensor, injectors, fuel lines the whole nine yards. The water pump that is on the car is brand new along with the power steering pump, and alternator. But with all that being said I'm going to go buy another new pump and going to see if they can get me a new pulley as well.

Thanks
Keith

Re: Water pump pully doesn't line up

Ok update! I bought a brand new from napa reverse rotation water pump and its the same fitment. So now I need to find a new pulley. Does anyone sell them new? Napa didn't carry them. My local scrap yards say they don't have any. I find this hard to believe. So this is where I'm at now....

Re: Water pump pully doesn't line up

OF COURSE they say they don't have any.

They always say that.

The way that business works is, if you're not one of their regular body shop or similar customers, then you're too much trouble to talk to over the phone. You're a waste of their time.

Don't take it personally; that's just The Way It Is.

Go visit them in person. Walk out onto the yard. You'll find an uncountable number of them. You'll trip over piles of them.

You just learned Lesson #1 in dealing with junkyards.

Lesson #2: Don't try to rip them off. (hide parts in your toolbox etc.)

Lesson #3: Don't go in there and try to impress them all about what a knowledgeable hot-rodder you are and you're their equal. YOU'RE NOT. As far as they're concerned, hot-rodders are snot-nosed bratty know-it-alls that come in there and think you're better than they are, and besides, all you're doing is playing with dolls, you're not even WORKING. Go in there like you're a plumber or a carpet layer or something and you need to fix your work truck because if you miss one more day of work you'll get fired even if your excuse is "my truck died again". You don't know a g-d thing about this {fill in the blank whatever vehicle you want your part off of} you just need to fix it. They'll be AHELLUVALOT more sympathetic and helpful.

Lesson #4: Don't tear up something valuable to get something worthless. Like, don't bust up a good front cap, to get the headlight adjusters off of it. Basically that turns something worth $500 into something they make $2 off of (if they even make that; that's the kind of stuff that walks out in people's toolboxes). A corollary of this lesson is, if you go onto the yard and want a C-clip for a rear end, it's $100; you want a C-clip and an axle, it's $100; you want both axles, it's $100; you want the axles and the carrier, it's $100; you want the axles, gears, and carrier, it's $100; you want the brakes too, it's $100; you want the brakes by themselves, it's $100; you want the whole rear, it's $100, but they'll be happy to dispose of any parts you pay for but don't carry out, for you. Just don't even hallucinate that you'll come in there and bust up a perfectly good $100 rear end for a C-clip and you're NOT going to pay for that whole rear that is now WORTHLESS.

There's an art to dealing with the buzzards. They provide a valuable public service, but you gotta learn The Rules or you come up empty.

I'm thinking the TBI caprice, roadmaster also use the same water pump pulley

Thanks everyone. I found one locally. Also found camaro specialties in my search that just happens to be a couple miles down the road from me. So now I have everything replaced and the belt on. Serp setup is now complete
