Valve Length

Hello,

I was wondering what valve length I needed to run with my setup.

Here is what I have:

Procomp 190cc heads. 2.02/160

Competition Cams 12-224-4 Camshaft

Manley Valve Spring seats: 1.300" ID, THE LOCATOR .650" the ID .500" .065" thick.

PSI 1.300 Chrome Silicone Valve Springs 350 @ 1.500" ID: .605 Seat Load: 150@ 2" Open Load: 350 @ 1.500 Coil Bind 1.150

Del-West Super 7* Titanium Retainers 1.500" Outside Diameter- Next step is 1.180" and the locator is .775"

I have not bought the locks yet, and here are the choices that I have:

Del West &Titanium +.050 valve locks for the Super 7* retainers in 11/32"
Del West &Titanium -.050 valve locks for the Super 7* retainers in 11/32

I was just wondering what valve length I needed with this setup, stock, +100? Also, would the valve length be affected by my decision to buy +.50 or -.50 locks?

Thanks,

Han

Since the install height of an OEM setup is normally around 1.800" and those springs require 2.000" install height, you'll need at least 0.200" longer valves. Add in the locater thickness of 0.065" and you need valves 0.265" longer to maintain a 2.000" install height but normally they'll be +0.250". You can use some +0.050" locks to gain a little more clearance then use shims under the locater to get back close to the required install height.

After the springs and valves are all set up and the heads are on the car, you'll need to measure out how much longer the pushrods will need to be to get good valve train geometry. With the increased valve length, you may also require longer rocker studs since the rockers will sit higher.

The exhaust valves in my BBC are stock length but the intake valves are +0.300". I gave up on the poor geometry of pedestal rockers and run T&D shaft rockers.

Many times it's a lot more beneficial to spend a little more money on preassembled heads that are set up to match the camshaft you intend to use. That way you don't need to buy special tools to get everything set up right.

Re: Valve Length

I don't have the specs right now but depending on the cam lift, installing stock length valves or +0.100" valves may be good enough for that cam.

The springs have an install height of 2.000" and open pressure is at 1.500" so that's only 0.500" lift. Coil bind is at 1.150" so that gives you 0.350" from open to coil bind. If you install the springs at 1.800" it will increase your seat and open pressures and still provide 0.150" before you get any coil bind.

That's all providing the bottoms of the retainers don't hit the top of the valve seals at max lift.

Re: Valve Length

Valve Lift for the Cam is: .525, Lobe Lift is : .35

Re: Valve Length

Okay, just wanted to make sure I am looking at all of this correctly.

If I install my springs at 1.800" with this cam I will have .125 before coil bind?

I calculated this by seeing that the cam lift is .525. Which would be .25 more than the valve seat and open lift.

Now I could get the +.050 retainers and have .175 before coil bind correct?

So my best bet would to buy +.050 retainers. After thinking about the .065 added by the valve seats would it just be better to go with the +.100 valved and the stock valve locks?
