Surging Idle to shut off

I picked up a 91 RS 305 tbi in a trade. The car has sat for 10 years. The fuel tank was drained and fuel pump replaced just before I got it. I replaced the distributor (broke when changing cap) cap, wires, plugs, pvc, belt, fuel filter, temp sender on manfold. Cleaned the TBI the ICA seems to be working ok, EGA cleaned working ok. Checked for Vac leaks could not find any.

The car runs fine for 1-2min then it starts to surge and die. Hit the key and it starts right back up but will surge again in 30sec. The temp gauge on the dash does not move even when the fan comes on so I pulled the temp sender plug off and the surging went away but it gives me a 15, 23 codes. If the new temp sender is bad why would it give me a code after unplugging it?
I have been reading a ton of posts about the surging problem but I can not seem to fix it.

Re: Surging Idle to shut off

Did you ever get your problem fixed? I have a similar issue. 91 TBI 305 with 48,000 miles. I have replaced every sensor on the car with new parts. Car still had a loping idle. I checked the fuel pressure and was reading only 5 psi. So I am currently having a new fuel pump installed. Hoping this fixes the problem.

Let me know what you found out.

The ECM is telling you the sensor is disconnected VIA setting those codes.

That’s usually due to one or more plugs not firing at idle.

That’s low but you didn’t mention a power problem, and that would be exhibiting itself with a fuel pressure problem.

Happy Racing!
