Blowing Plugs

So this has actually been an issue for years especially since the car has been parked for the last 5. Now I'm trying to get it back on the road and thought I'd see if I could get some insight.

It doesn't happen frequently and it's not always the same cylinder, but occasionally I'll be driving up a steep hill or mountain and it will drop down a gear to maintain speed and then POP. I literally blow the top of the plug destroying the wire with it.

Now, this isn't the end of the world. I keep a bottle of water, spare plugs and wires with me at all times for when this occurs, but pulling over on the interstate to swap out a plug and a wire on a hot engine is a pain in the ***.

My car is an 88 camaro with the 2.8 MPFI moter. Other than that she has always ran like a dream so I've never quite understood why this happens.

If anyone has any suggestions or ideas I'm curious to see what your thoughts are.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Blowing Plugs

Check that the base distributor timing is at 10* BTDC. Also change the brand of spark plugs. My preference is the copper core orange box Autolite ($1.29 each).

Actually, like I said it's been years, but if I remember right I believe I always ran bosch plugs in it.

Re: Blowing Plugs

Try a set of AC Delco plugs. It seems like my engines always ran the best with them and they last a long time.

I asked because my brother used to run Bosch plugs in his old Bronco. The porcelain used to blow out of them all the time.

Re: Blowing Plugs

Thanks for the info guys. I'll try the AC delco or autolites and see what happens. It'll be a long time before I'll know for sure, but something tells me that will be my solution. Like I said the car runs like a champ. The plugs were never fouled up with oil or anything weird so I think you have me on the right track.

Right now I have to get her to fire up before they matter. I think my fuel pump died sitting all that time or my lines are clogged so that's the current project. Hopefully she'll be running soon.
