car doesnt like to start after its been running for a bit
ive searched this alot but i cant seem to find anybody whos having the same problem.
when my car is cold it starts just fine, i hop in it and turn the key and it will just keep turning until i tap the gas. when i do tap the gas it fires right up every time but if i dont tap the gas it will just keep turning.
NOW when my car is warmed up from driving to the store or whatever... it gives me a problem starting every time.... i turn the key and the engine will turn over once or twice and then stop, but the starter doesnt stop, you can hear it still spinning (like when you turn the key and the car is already on) It ONLY does this when its warm ive never had it happen cold.... eventually it will start but usually it takes 3,4 or 5 turns.... sometimes upwards of 8-10 times before it will start but its never left me stranded and its been like this since i bought the car (6 months) and doesnt seem to be getting any worse its just really annoying and frankly quite embarrasing when i pull into the gas station and someone compliments the car, then when im filled up and go to leave it wont start. If you have ANY idea what this could be please let me know as i would LOVE LOVE LOVE to get this fixed. thanks

i have an 84 camaro 40k miles with a 305 in it.the PO upgraded the following:
edelbrock victor jr intake manifold
edelbrock 1406 carb
removed emissions equipment
removed a/c
i was told a mild cam had been put in it but its hard to tell.
plug wires
plugs
and i put a cheap edelbrock circle air cleaner on from autozone.
i just got a set of ceramic coated mid length headers off craigslist and a flowmaster "american thunder" 3" cat back. i have the car at the exhaust shop now getting it mounted on the car and having a Y pipe fabbd up.
besides that shes all stock

Did it have the problem before the headers?
When it's warm, and you start it, does it turn over slowly?
Im suspecting a starter heatsoak issue, which is super common with headers.

No no its at the shop getting the headers put on now... i left it at the shop overnight. this is an ongoing problems... and no its not a slow crank it sounds normal it just doesnt turn enough times to get the engine going before it "gives out" for lack of a better term.

When you go to restart have you tried combinations of pumping or leaving the gas alone?

If the starter disengages from the flywheel, you need to replace the starter.

Keep in mind that heat expands metal, and heat creates higher resistance in electrical systems... May not be much, but just enough.
Just an epiphany if that makes a difference.

[My 88 350 5.7 does the same can't find the problem.[/B]

Re: car doesnt like to start after its been running for a bit
I had an interesting diagnosis with my '83 Z28 305. The car took around 30 seconds of cranking to start it, turned out it was fuel leaking in the carburetor, which burnt up the starter causing a short to voltage somewhere inside to the point where the starter would sometimes crank the engine when my key was out of the ignition, I had to open the hood and remove a battery cable to stop it, so much fun hahaha, the armature housing coils were black, crispy, and falling apart so I replaced the starter and adjusted the fuel hose. My car now cranks for 5-10 secs because it needs to fill the carburetor bowl up with fuel, and no more demon possessed car starting.
Anyways another interesting long starting issue with the fuel leaking. You know how the fuel hose from the (mechanical) fuel pump came to the front of the engine, behind the alternator, upwards straight to the carb. I had switched the hose to a slightly longer one to come up an inch or two above the internal fuel filter in the carb and back downwards towards the filter and that helped prevent fuel from very slowly draining back into my oil pan or magic hole or wherever it's going and a little through the intake manifold.... OMG that reminds me I should check my oil, I forgot about that... Sh#$
If you have an older carb, it's most likely leaking, I have a quadrajet 4Barrel 750cfm with swapped primary rods and jets from another carb with one size bigger, whooptie doo. Needs Rebuilt Even though the car runs awesome, except for going uphill.... ... Good Luck Hope something was useful out of my findings so far.

Anyways if your engine is cranking, good but you need to diagnose if your getting spark at plugs, fuel to the intake, timing to fire plugs at the the correct time, and compression in the cylinders. Do you have a carburetor or fuel injection, and an ohm/volt meter?

Re: car doesnt like to start after its been running for a bit
is the engine turning over normally but not starting?
is the starter motor spinning but not turning over the motor?
is the starter motor turning over the engine too slowly for it to start?
