my car shakes violently

hello, for starters I don't know if this is the correct place to post this... but I recently bought a 91 Camaro.5 speed. 305.t tops.. and when I start to get around 35 mph my car starts shaking( I think its going to fall apart). it pulls to the right also.. the guy I bought it from said rotor was warped. is it possible that would cause this?

That would have to be some serious warping. You should be able to check that by looking at the rotor. If it's that bad, it would be pretty obvious, i.e. significant wear. I would check the steering or suspension components: tie rods, ball joints, shock/strut mount, bushings, etc. for something loose. Just grab a rubber mallet and start banging around underneath the car until something rattles.

Could be the rotor. Same thing happened with mine. Turned out, it was a tie rod that needed replaced. Yep I know that feeling when the steering wheel wants to go its own way. Also check the strut mount to be safe.

Re: my car shakes violently

If it shakes that bad something is out of balance. Most likely cause is snow packed into one or more of the wheels. Easiest way to fix is leave it in a warm garage overnight. The pulling to one side is being caused by something else.

Look at the front tires and see if they are moving left and right rapidly. if this is true, then your tires may need to be balanced or some steering component is bad. If you replace any steering component just remember to grease the joints.

If your car pulls to the right, then possibilities could include; Worn brake caliper/s, uneven tire pressure, uneven braking pressure, bad steering alignment, worn steering component/s, worn brakes. That's all I can think at the moment.

Easiest to check is tire pressure, then go see if your tires need balanced and get an alignment done, Check your brakes anyways whether that fixes the problem or temporarily fixes it.. If the rotors are worn, then that could encourage your car to shake mildly at first, then other worn out parts make the problem worse.

Re: my car shakes violently

Frozen pins in your caliper can make the car yaw badly under braking too. This happened to me once. A pin froze and I didn't know it. Some cars checked up in front of me, I hit my brake hard at about 60mph and did a 360 in the middle of the hi-way. My front end came back around and hit a chevy Impala in the front wheel. Bent the heck out of her spindle, the car was not even drivable. All I got was a small crack in my front bumper that I fixed with jb weld and painted over, and you cant even tell it now. Darndest thing....

Re: my car shakes violently

Warped rotors are possible if your caliper pins are sticking. If it is warped rotors when you apply brake it would get worse. If it does it consistently at around that speed I would say steering components are a long shot. Whens the last time you had your tires balanced? I would check that. Also, It could be worn front struts. Jounce (Push down on) the front end, it should come back up firmly and "rebound" after one bounce or so. If you do suspect a wheel bearing, tie rod ends or lower ball joints, raise the vehicle with a jack under the control arm, take a pry bar and pry up on the lower tire, if it feels loose, your ball joint is bad. Then grab the tire and shake it side to side, it should move in unison with the other tire, if it doesn't something in your steering is loose.

Re: my car shakes violently

sounds like some broken belts in the front end tires for the shake, as for the pulling, check the alignment and tire pressure as a good free place to start ... to check for bad belts, look over the front tires for bumps or knots and with some leather gloves, run your hands along the tread of the tires feeling for flat spots or knots ... for a good place to start looking for alignment set your drivers side tire to straight with the fender, and go around and look at the passengers side to see if it is straight ... just some places to start ... at that low of a speed, i wouldnt think out of balance a little would make it as bad as you say it is
