Accelerates Out of Control

I've had 2 Camaros do this to me so far. One being a 91 RS V6 and the other a 89 IROC-Z 350 TPI.

Each time I'm stopped and then as I accelerate the car keeps accelerating by it's self to the point where I have to turn the ignition off to stop it. After letting the car sit for a few minutes then starting it back up it runs fine. My IROC-Z has done it twice now and the RS only one time. Every time this has happened its been summer time and hot outside.

I was thinking maybe the cruise control? But then the CC on my IROC-Z was working then.

Anyone have this problem before? If so, what was causing it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!

Re: Accelerates Out of Control

Some thing to check: Sticky throttle plate, defective TPS, interference on throttle linkage, bent cable, vacuum leak.

I would put a stronger throttle return spring on it.

I've heard of floor mats doing the same, especially when random.

If the TB is worn , the engine vac will pull on the butterflies when the throttle is released and will jam them against the bore in a open position.
As soon as you kill the engine , there is no vac so the butterflies close properly
Typically tapping the pedal when it occurs will close them

If it ever happens again I'll give it a try. Thanks!

I had a similar problem with a BBK 52MM, I added two stronger throttle return springs and its been better since.

Re: Accelerates Out of Control

I had my accelerator stay stuck at WOT going down the road and that scared the crap out of me. I turned it off, coast it to a safe place and it was the TVS cable somehow interfered. I dont remember exactly but the part it slides in the clip area got stuck. I was able to later adjust it.
