Replacing a Split Plug Boot

Any tips or tricks for installing a new boot over the termination?

Re: Replacing a Split Plug Boot

If it's a daily driver, I'd replace the wire.
For something that doesn't get wet, I've put a few tight wraps of electrical tape around a split boot and never had a problem. As long as there's no metal within 1/4" of the split region, it will be fine.

Re: Replacing a Split Plug Boot

For the moment, I'd prefer to replace the boot.

Lube the terminal & wire about 1/4 inch above terminal with a lil bit of electric grease

^This is the way. Boot will slide on easily with dielectric grease on the lead.

Re: Replacing a Split Plug Boot

Yup: dielectric grease is a necessity. Wouldn't hurt to make sure the boot is as warm as you can stand it; maybe drop it in boiling water for a coupla minutes right before starting.

Agree

I assemble all of my plug wires for the 86 T/A and our 67 Camaro and what he said has been the easiest way of doing it.

MSD custom length sets where the plug side is done and you cut, crimp and install the boot on the distributor side.

Re: Replacing a Split Plug Boot

Well, crap. I was prepared for a battle, but if the swap, from beginning to end, took more than a minute, I'd be surprised. I used WD40, BTW. No boiling water either. I'm actually surprised.
