Lost oil out the back, any thoughts?

I finally got my engine fired up, ran for a few seconds and stalled, I was trying to dial in timing. I went to adjust the distributor and noticed something dripping. I looked under the car and pretty much whatever was in the pan came out the back of the engine, down the pan. It looks like rear main/oil pan area. I'm thinking something with the rear main seal failed and the pump just pushed it right out of there. Any other ideas? Regardless, I know that pan is coming back off, just more curious than anything else.

Is the oil leak as high up as the valve covers? I replaced the valve cover gaskets with silicone and the gasket rolled on the back side i didn't notice when installing, had to put my hand in back of the valve covers to feel the oil.

No, the whole back side of the engine is dry around valve covers, intake, distributor, bellhousing, etc. just down the back of the pan. Its the oil pan/rear main area.

Sounds like someone forgot to put the oil galley plugs back in.

Yeah, I was thinking oil galley plugs. There are a few plugs at the back of the block, behind the flexplate/flywheel that deliver oil to the lifters. Check out the pan seal in addition to the rear main seal.

I know the oil galley plugs were there. Once I get it apart I'll check the rear main area.

I thought the other guy was talking about the ones in the deck, towards the back of the block. A buddies truck has one that leaks there.
