Trixy is being fickle again...

Alright ladies and gentlemen Trixy my beloved 1991 Chevy Camaro is at her usual mischief again and i need some advice...

So ever since i got the car it has had a rough shuddery idle not bad but noticeable and now its gotten a little worse and when you rev her in neutral its a little slugish and doesnt feel as smooth as my old carburated 82 camaro which i find odd. But even more so it cuts out every now and then under hard acceleration usually just a little short hesitation but today on the way home she cut out and basically died and fell on her face for a second.

I have replace a ton of stuff when i got the car such as:
Throttle position sensor
Bosch injectors
Idle air control valve
O2 sensor
Map sensor
EGR Valve
Egr solenoid
Intake air temp sensor
Spark plugs
Entire Distributor
Igntion Coil
Block temp sensor
Fan switch sensor
And most recently a monster in a box trans and 2600 locking stall converter

What do you guys think is the culprit id love for a smoother cleaner sounding rev and it not to cut out while accelerating

as always, READ YOUR CODES!! if ,however there are none ,at least you know its not sensor related. sounds to me like you may have a fuel delivery problem.check your fuel pressure.new filter? trust me ,I know what its like. im in love with my 86 IROC TPI car as well. look her over, and get back to us

I was thinking fuel related as well. I have no codes. I did change the fuel filter when i changed all the other sensors. Everything listed was changed in the last 1000 miles to haha. Would upgrading the fuel pump and getting a adjustable fuel pressure regulator help with performance any and possibly fix my problem? Iv been debating on it for a week or two now.

if thinking of a fuel pump, test your fuel pressure first. IF you do buy one get the best that NAPA has to offer.and a AFPR is not necessary on a purely street driven car. but DO pull the hose off and check for fuel in the vac hose. how are your injectors? how old are they? sometimes a fresh set works wonders. if you decide to get them "south bay" is who to call on that one

I have a fresh set of Bosch ones from south bay. Less than 1000 miles on them. Ill have to get a fuel pressure gauge tomorrow and get back to you with all the results

So i checked the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator and it doesnt seem to have any fuel in it. I think ill replace the fuel pump with a Walbro 255 and see if she runs how she should. I may need to do a timing swap as well its the original timing chain at 158,571 miles of abuse.

As Rusty said, check your fuel pressure. Don't just throw more parts at it trying to fix the problem.

So i replaced the fuel pump against your guys wishes. Which was not the problem. It seems like theres a misfire now. Couple things iv been noticing is when cruising down the freeway you can here the pitch of the motor changing at a rhythm and when idling at a light theres a shutter that seems to be the same rhythm. I am buying spark plug wires for her tomorrow not to try and fix the problem but because its been a while im sure.

we all have just resorted to throwing $100s at our cars when we get stumped.i have to ask though, do you have any codes showing? a comprehensive tune up MIGHT be all you need.anyway ,good luck ,and let us know how it went

Nope no codes i checked them earlier just to be sure. A friend of mine said it could be the timing chain is stretched but would that cause a misfire feel and hesitation?

When I first got my car it would jump timing with backfire and hesitation. At 180k on the clock it was a stretched timing chain. Safe bet to check it out.

Re: Trixy is being fickle again...

Shuttering and weird rhythm, loss of power, shaky engine... You have a misfire my friend. Either spark induced or possibly a fuel injector issue. Do your tune up, then start unplugging injectors until you notice a change. Either worse or it may not make any difference if that injector is not firing.

Hopefully, a dead cylinder is not the issue. But, since you throw money at parts instead of tools and testing equipment... I will spare you (and Trixy) the info for the diagnostic procedure for figuring this out. New parts never hurt anyway.

Also I only read he replaced the ignition coil. Might be an ignition control module too.
