Help with open cleaner on carbed engine

I have been searching over the forums and no where can I find how to install an open air cleaner on a carbed 305. The car is a 1986 z28. I thought it would be straight forward but inside the base of the stock air cleaner there is a little blue thing that says AC on it. It has two vacuum lines that come off of it as well from the bottom. One line goes to the thermac device and the other to the carb. Do I need this piece for the new air cleaner or just plug the hole on the carb? I have been trying to do some research but can't find anything only IAT sensor which I don't see one on the car. Thanks.

You should be able to get an air cleaner that has a vacuum port on it's base, I've seen them.

Not sure what the AC thing you're mentioning is though...?

Re: Help with open air cleaner on carbed engine

Here is a few pics. I went and bought a Haynes manual and it says that it is a Air Temp sensor. How do I put this into the new air cleaner? Because the one vacuum line goes to the thermac which is removed now. The aftermarket air cleaner has a opening on the bottom of it. Could I remove the vacuum line going to the thermac from the sensor and leave it open and keep the vacuum line going to the back of the carb and just stick the sensor inside the new base?

Re: Help with open cleaner on carbed engine

That blue thing in the air cleaner base is a vacuum switch/temperature sensor. It routes vacuum to the door in the air cleaner snorkel depending on the temperature of the air that's drawn into the air cleaner.

If you run an open element air cleaner, just cap off the vacuum nipple at the carb.

Re: Help with open cleaner on carbed engine

So basically you're saying that if I run an open air cleaner then I don't need an air temp sensor? Will this affect the way the engine runs at all? Has anyone else done this? I know with the tbi engine you have to place the IAT sensor in the new air cleaner but this carbed 305 doesnt have one.

Re: Help with open cleaner on carbed engine

Don't need it on an open air filter, it's not really a temp sensor either and really has no effect on how the engine runs.
