Camaro 1985 out of timing

Hi guys I got a camaro 1985 fuel injection iroc z I notice the when I turn on the car I jumps the rpm a lil bit so when starts smells a lot of crude fuel when I drive the car I can feel the car dosent have a power to pick up and a clicking noise when I step on the gas and when I let the pedal out stops so my friend told me can be a lil bit out of timing Bc the clicking noise so I remove the valve covers and ajust the rocket arm i want to know what steps I have to do to ajust the timing I know the engine is a 305 vin F
Please help thank you

Re: Camaro 1985 out of timing

If the timing is to advanced the engine can ping especially under lode.

The pinging is actually in the cylinders during ignition.

Before you do any thing either put a "full" tank of 92 octane fuel in it or add a octane booster additive to a full tank of regular gas.

See if that helps with the pinging even a little bit.

If it does help then adjusting the timing is in order.

Why are you adjusting the rocker arms ?

Re: Camaro 1985 out of timing

I just got the car and I replaced the MAT sensor the ECM and I did a flush on the engine Bc was very dirty so after changing the ECM and MAT sensor code 23 keeps coming on I fix all the wiring and make sure is no wires making ground I ajust the rocket arm Bc I can hear a lil clicking on the valve covers and i was thinking the Bc that noise but still there so my friend told me can be a lil bit out of timing but In fuel injection never done a timing adjustment I'm gonna try the 92 and put a booster see what it does

I run the car with fuel 92 and drive it a lil bit but keeps doing the same thing and open the hood and see on the exhaust manifold a lil bit smoking so they told me can be a catalyst converter no good and can be one of the problem also

Re: Camaro 1985 out of timing

Put a timing light on it that will let you know if it is off.

Also check the normal tune up items, plugs wires, cap rotor etc.

With the EST wire disconnected the timing on your car should be at 6* BTDC.

If you have to buy a gun I suggest one with a digital screen. They are much more accurate than just using a flashing light.

It should have a digital RPM option that alone is worth the extra money.

Here's the one I bought and suggest =

https://www.thirdgen.org/settingtiming

Its a little wetherpack connector that should have black and tan wires going to it. Its located on the passenger's side of the engine bay between the strut mount and the firewall.
