How can I keep the thermac valve with headers?
How can I keep the thermac valve with headers?
I have a 305 TBI, and the air cleaner has a thermac valve that goes to the stock exhaust manifold on the driver side.
I got smog legal headers with AIR tubes, but they don't have anything for the thermac valve.

Back in the 60's, I recall seeing kits that had a "stove" that you would clamp on to one of the header tubes and then run a longer flex tube to the thermac valve. I don't even know if you can still find these anymore.
You can run without the heat, but you're going to need this when inspection time comes.
Edit: This is the only thing that I found that might work for you.

I haven't seen them around in a while. Like Paulo said, there was a heat stove tube that you clamped onto some straight section of one of the primary header tubes and then attached your THERMAC hot air hose to it. Back when everything was carbureted, many sets of headers came with them right out of the box (and they rusted to pieces after a year on the car). Most guys just chucked them. I used to have one, but it's long gone. If I'm installing headers, I'm probably not retaining the stock air cleaner housing anyway.
It was a simple affair- you could probably build your own. Just a short section of thin-gague metal pipe with two "ears" on it. About 1/2" wide each, on either side of the tube, the ears continued straight down off the bottom of the tube for about 1/2" (to give some room for the air to pass over the header pipe and go up the tube) and then bent outward at 90* giving a flat surface to rest on the header tube and and for the clamps to go around to retain it. The clamps were just plain old worm gear hose clamps.
A single piece of exhaust tubing (the appropriate diameter for your hot air hose to fit over) could be cut and bent EASILY to approximate this setup. In fact, it would probably be higher quality than the originals, which were very thin prime steel.

Yup: in fact, that's exactly what the header mfrs used to do, is attach a stove to a convenient header tube.
Shouldn't be too tough to make something up out of sheet metal and hose-clamp it to the header tube.

I thought smog legal TBI headers had that on them. Atleast the few Ive seen did?

Re: How can I keep the thermac valve with headers?
I just passed smog with my hookers 2055 and had it hooked up like this. still fully functional
Re: How can I keep the thermac valve with headers?
Yeah I need to pass inspection right now. The hooker 2055s do not come with anything for it.
So how exactly does the tubing connect to the header? There's no hole in the header tube, the thermac tube is just collecting heat coming off the headers, right? So I just need to clamp the thermac tube above the header tubes.
