Raw gas smell

I have a smell of raw gas on the
Drivers side rear of the car (yes, near the fuel filler) I have a new gas cap. No loud venting when removing the cap. There is no apparent leakage when filling the tank full. Car runs great.plenty of power, good idle, etc.
Where is the smell coming from?
Peace

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: Raw gas smell

Prolly the tank and/or filler neck are cracked at or near their joint.

Pretty common.

Could also be, one of the rubber hoses on top of the tank (return for example, or vent) is cracked and leaking.

Re: Raw gas smell

Is it dripping anywhere? Is the smell only when the engine is running? Do you have a cam with a wide exhaust duration? Did you remove all of your emissions equipment?

I've been having the exact same issue. About to change out the tank.

Re: Raw gas smell

I didn't tighten the hose clamps on the evap canister line tight enough and had this issue. So check the lines for a quick fix before taking the time to do any more serious diagnostics like dropping the tank. If your car is not lowered, you may even be able to do it without lifting the rear end at all.

Thanks Someone972, those lines checked okay. I got up under the rear the other day and saw what a previous owner had done. JB Weld around the filler neck and the tank under that area had been getting wet. Ordered a new tank kit and will be doing it next week.

Note the JB Weld around the filler neck.

Lower corner of tank has been staying wet.
