305 hesitating and extremely hot exhaust
305 hesitating and extremely hot exhaust
I just bought an 89 camaro with a 305 crate motor with approx 10,000 miles on it. I have only driven it twice, It seemed like the exhaust was hot when I first drove it home. The second time I took it out I got a new tank of 93 octane gas. After I left the gas station and was going approx 55 it would hesitate and tehn run. It kept happening. When I stopped the motor died. I was able to restatr it but only by pumping the gas. It would miss and slowly climb about 500 rpm every couple minutes. When I got it to 3000rpm it would run but as soon as it came down it would cough. I managed to get it home and drained the tank thinking gas, i replaced the fuel filter. I managed to get it running again and tried to run it for 30 minutes to clear out any remaining old gas.It did not get better and when I turned it off I noticed smoke coming from the bottom rear. I looked and the exhaust had gotten so hot that the rubber grommets holding it up were smoking. The service engine light came on and the reading was a 44 which indicates a lean fuel mixture in the exhaust. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I forgot to mention it is a TBI

It's WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY lean.
Also needs the timing advanced about 25°.
Try advancing the timing until it runs as right as it can, FIRST; then go from there.

Id take off the cat converter if smog tests aren't an issue after you get that timing right.
Re: 305 hesitating and extremely hot exhaust
It is the original cat from 89. I do not have to pass emissions in Missouri since it is 25 years old. A friend suggested taking off the cat but I wanted to see if anyone else agreed since I have to cut it off

When they stop up they can cause major pains. By all means get rid of it and even if its not your problem your car will run much healthier
Re: 305 hesitating and extremely hot exhaust
The tubing that runs to the cat connected to the air pump via the diverter valve. The air pump provides air to the cat. This person explains the operation of it all pretty well. http://www.auto-repair-help.com/automotive_maintenance/air_injection.php If the smog system has been removed, then I would just cap the tubing. However, if you're considering keeping/replacing the cat, then I'd recommend getting the air system reconnected.

Leave the cat, tubing, and all that, ALONE.
Concentrate on your actual problem, NOT on hacking up your car.
Advance the timing.

Re: 305 hesitating and extremely hot exhaust
I removed the cat and that did NOT fix the problem. I can start the motor and it runs about 5 seconds and then dies. If I sit in the car and keep pumping the gas it will keep running but as soon as I stop pumping it will die after a few seconds. If I shoot it with starting fluid I can keep it running. It sounds like fuel delivery. I replaced teh fuel filter and replaced all of the gas - see earlier post. I also know the pump works because when I drained the gas I used it to pump the gas out. I can hear it when I turn the key priming. Is there a float or a pressure valve of some sort that could be the problem? Like I said, it will start every time I try but only runs 5 seconds, unless I pump the gas.

How about fuel pressure?
